Melanie Phillips on Egypt

Read Melanie Phillips on events in Egypt:  "The nightmare has always been what will happen when Mubarak departs the stage – a development that Obama actually appears to be trying to accelerate, having belatedly discovered the attractions of promoting democracy in the Arab world at the very moment that the Islamists are poised to take control. This is but the latest astoundingly inept or malign action by Obama against the interests of America and the west. An Islamist Egypt would alter the dynamics of the entire region – Jordan would surely not be far behind -- and pose an urgent and acute threat to the western world. That nightmare, it would seem, now might be upon us.

Bush Derangement Syndrome: The Sequel

Oh, brother: "Chris Matthews Blames Egypt Riots on George W. Bush and Iraq War.  It's a metaphysical certitude that whenever anything happens in the Middle East, the media will quickly blame former President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq."

Terror Threat

This is very frightening, especially for Israel.

Boortz on the Entitlement Mentality

Neal Boortz writes:  "...this must be said. The ultimate blame for what is looking like the eventual economic destruction of our country rests with us, not these politicians. America is a country chock full of people who think that the federal government exists for no real purpose other than to solve every problem they ever have. If they abuse their health, the government is supposed to pay to make them well again. If they fail to save for retirement, the government is supposed to step in with a guaranteed lifetime retirement income. If they spend like teenage girls in a mall, and can't pay their home mortgage, then the government is supposed to step in and bail them out and provide a place for them to live. It's always the government. The government is always there to solve your problems, and the government should always take money away from other people, who have lived their lives responsibly, to pay for the solutions. This country can be saved. But as long as we have a sizable portion of our population, the moocher class, begging for more and more benefits from the government, and voting accordingly, our future looks dim."

Dr. Sowell on Real Achievements

As always, Thomas Sowell doesn't mince words: "Many of the people we honor today are people who are skilled in the rhetoric of grievances and promises of new 'rights' at someone else's expense. But is that what is going to make a better America"

Politically Incorrect Achievement

Did you know that winning is bad?

The State of the Union

I can't stand to listen to, or look at, Obama during his speeches, so once again I'll be relying on some clever drunkblogging at Vodkapundit.  Meanwhile, here's what some Lucianne.com readers have to say. Update: why watch the speech at all when you can read a translation of it here(via Protein Wisdom).

"Schlubs" In Hollywood

Depressing, isn't it?

Can't We All Just Get Along?!

Read the comments regarding this piece by Senator Coburn. Republicans who think in this kowtowing sort of way really make me wonder about their spine. And this whole seating arrangement nonsense sounds like something you'd do in kindergarten! Will they all hold hands during the State of the Union speech, and get gold stars for good behavior, as well?

Never Let a Crisis Go To Waste

Read this Victor Davis Hanson analysis of Obama's poll numbers:  "...the current rise is exclusively a direct result of three interrelated phenomena: 1) the tragic January 8, 2011, Tucson shootings; 2) the hysterical left-wing scapegoating of everyone from the Tea Party to Sarah Palin for the violence; and 3) the sudden emergence of a sober and judicious Mandela-like Obama, quite admirably calling for calm on all sides — while suggesting simultaneously that the horrific killings had no connection with the right wing, but also that the horrific killings offer an appropriate moment to reconsider all political zealotry in general.  In the ensuing ten days, Obama’s polls and approval have skyrocketed. However politically brilliant all of this was, it remains in some sense quite morbid, in a creepy sort of never-waste-a-tragedy sense. The reaction to the killings almost instantly blotted out information about and concern for the dead and maimed. Yet in this entire confusing media circus, questions simply were not only not answered, but in fact never raised." (Link via Instapundit)  Pretty sad, and pretty typical of the ignorant American voter's reality TV mentality.

Mainstream Media Muteness

The noticeable lack of mainstream media coverage of this grotesque story is unsurprising. But don't you want to bet they'd certainly be covering it if a pro-lifer had gone in there and killed the abortionist?

A Non-Apology Apology

"Cohen stopped short of a straightforward apology, instead regretting how his remarks were 'portrayed.'"  Well, we know what Steve Cohen meant, so  this non-apology apology is insulting, too.

More "Jewish vs. Goyish"

Here's the latest list of "Jewish vs. Goyish", from Aish.

Blood On His Hands

Mona Charen has written about the brutal decapitation of Daniel Pearl by the Religion of Peace. She ends by saying,   "Perhaps, nearly a decade after 9/11 and the murder of Daniel Pearl, we've forgotten just how vicious our enemies are. Perhaps, after all of the sacrifice and expense of the past decade, we're inclined to relax our vigilance. Let's not."

Another Pointless Remake

Just how many remakes do we need of "A Star is Born"?  The Judy Garland version was the best. Can't they leave well enough alone?

Let's Continue to Fund Abortions!

The Anchoress reports on that evil Philadelphia abortion mill. "Well, the story of Kermit Gosnell is about abortion; it’s about abortion in America. And abortion in America is about a mindset, — even (or especially) among regulation-happy folk who will make a big noise about public safety on issues large and small — that will protect a Gosnell, and purposely turn a blind eye to abortion centers and practitioners and all of their lapses and illegalities, as long as the abortions keep on coming. If that were not true, if the blind eye were not being turned, don’t you think someone — before now — would have seen and been disgusted by Kermit Gosnell’s collection of severed baby feet?"

Oh Boy

Will Sarah Palin and the Tea Party get blamed for this terrible shooting spree as well?  What always bothers me is how they never release the names of these killers because of their age. If you're old enough to kill,  you should be old enough to be identified. The "but-he's-just-a-boy" defense doesn't wash.

Sickening Smear Tactics

So, Republicans are now like Nazis, in addition to killing people and starving children.  This disgraceful propaganda has been around for years, but it's even more despicable to hear a supposed Jew using the Nazi analogy.  The Republicans need to start countering every lie, and quickly -- if they have any spine at all.

Cruising the Web With Betsy

I've always liked the Cruising the Web series at Betsy's Page, and I couldn't agree more with her take on Ron Reagan's recent media appearances.  She says,
"There is something shameful on how Ron Reagan Jr. is trying to cash in on his father's popularity by spreading rumors that his father had symptoms of Alzheimer's while in office despite how this has been debunked by both his doctors and people who worked with him on a regular basis. And, as Paul Bedard reports in US News, Ron Reagan tells a story about his dad having brain surgery that is totally belied by any of the facts. At best, Reagan's son is confusing normal memory lapses that everyone has, like failing to recall the names of canyons he was flying over, with symptoms of Alzheimer's. At worst, he's making the accusation to sell more copies of his book."
Absolutely right. I find it very unseemly, and extremely unnecessary.

The Obama Distraction

Instapundit's had a series of posts called "Why They'd Rather Talk About Sarah Palin".  Go read all of them.  It's obvious that the Obama administration, and its supporters in the media, wants to distract the public from the continuing bad economy, unemployment, higher gas & food prices, entitlement spending, etc.  At least they haven't invoked the name of George W. Bush lately, but still...!

The Nazi Files

Adolf Eichmann was one of the worst of the Nazis. I'm reading a new book called The Envoy: The Epic Rescue of the Last Jews of Europe in the Desperate Closing Months of World War II , and in it, Simon Wiesenthal says, "In the moment Eichman put on the swastika, the first casualty he deported was not a Jew, but his own conscience."

The Silent Majority

Read this entire piece by Betsy M. Galliher, explaining perfectly how conservatives think, and how we're continually attacked for it. Here's an excerpt:
"The only person who actually pulled the trigger on that terrible, fateful day was Jared Loughner -- by every account, a deeply troubled young man. But the real guilty walk among us: senior citizens in red, white, and blue, armed with signs saying 'Taxed Enough Already'; flag-wavers clinging to guns and religion; doctors; the wealthy; business owners; talk radio; and any citizen -- particularly a conservative -- who dares exercise his or her right to free speech.
We're called greedy, stupid, and racist. We're ridiculed with snide 'slurpee' innuendos and called lewd and malicious names, such as 'teabaggers.' Ordinary citizens are maligned by their own government while the pious, liberal elite get a free pass on reason and truth, while Islamists invoke their religious cloak, while the ideologue professes his moral superiority, while the media uses the power of spin, and while leftists, including Robert Gibbs and Barack Obama, employ their bully pulpit.
We defend conservatism by our very way of life: as self-reliant, taxpaying, moral citizens, and as faithful defenders of limited government and the power of the individual. We are violent inciters only insomuch as we threaten the current leftist, agenda-driven stranglehold on government. So alarming is our threat that the real inciters wasted no time in politicizing the tragic deaths of six innocent citizens, not to mention one revered congresswoman still fighting for her life. And they will waste no time in shamelessly exploiting a 'crisis' at the hand of a lone psychopath to further enact gun control and squelch freedom of speech under cries of 'civility.'"

Any Questions?

Look at this perfect editorial cartoon by Ramirez (as discovered at Doug Ross @ Journal.)

Melanie Phillips on Israel

She urges Israel's supporters to wake up:
"...Moral and cultural relativism — the belief that subjective experience trumps moral authority and any notion of objectivity or truth — has turned right and wrong on their heads. Because of the dominant belief in multiculturalism, victim culture and minority rights, self-designated victim groups — those without power — can never do wrong while majority groups can never do right. And Jews are not considered a minority because — in the hateful discourse of today — Jews are held to be all-powerful as they 'control' the media, Wall Street and America. So the Muslim world cannot be held responsible for blowing people up as they are the third world victims of the west; so any atrocities they commit must be the fault of their victims; and so the US had it coming to it on 9/11. And in similar fashion, Israel can never be the victim of the Arab world; the murder of Israelis by the Arab world must be Israel's own fault...For years, Israel has been playing a defensive diplomatic game, which suggests inescapably that it has a case to answer. Such diplomatic cringing has badly undermined it and hugely strengthened its enemies, who are taking advantage of such weakness over and over again. It's time for Israel to realize that military campaigns against its enemies are not enough. It has to call time on its false friends too, and start fighting both these and its more obvious enemies on the battleground of the mind."

Innocent Victims

Take a look at the innocent victims of yesterday's killing spree in Arizona. The news media would be better off focusing on them, instead of making excuses and blaming Sarah Palin and Fox News for the murderer's rampage. He deserves to be executed -- period!

A State of Denial

Oh, brother! Here's a newspaper I won't be reading: "Virginia Newspaper Editor 'Proud' to Hire Helen Thomas... Benton added that after a lengthy discussion with Thomas, he is convinced that she is neither 'bigoted, nor racist, nor anti-Semitic.' In fact, Benton claims, Thomas' comments on Jews were taken out of context."

Murder in Arizona

The Anchoress says it all: "It is appalling to note that some on the social media circuits are already letting the conspiracy theories fly according to their agendas – some on the left are already tweeting about Sarah Palin and gun imagery, others are countering with this and some are not beneath bringing the full-crazy and wondering if this was done purposely to blame Palin. Not the time, folks! It’s kind of disgusting when you hear someone is shot and the first thing you do is try to figure out how to fit the terrible news to your political worldview. Blame the gunman." And most of all, think of the victims of this senseless rampage, including  Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

London's 9/11 Memorial

This is a sculpture made out of World Trade Center steel to honor the memory of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. There's always someone who is offended, however:  "But Jilly Finch, 59, secretary of the local Shad Thames Residents Association, said the sculpture was 'violent'.  She said: 'It’s so in your face that people won’t be able to pass by or overlook it. It’s not something that promotes peace — it draws attention to violence.'"  Maybe it's just me, but people shouldn't just pass by or overlook it -- it's a reminder of the senseless violence and loss of life that day.

The Religion of Peace ... Really!

Here's a very nice story about truly peaceful Muslims protecting the lives of Coptic Christians in Egypt. I wish we could hear such stories more often: "From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as 'human shields' for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife." Now that's more like it!

Cynically Speaking

Is it only me who is tired of this story of the homeless man with the radio voice? I wondered why he never reunited with his mother BEFORE being 'discovered' begging! Maybe it was more dramatic reuniting while the network cameras were rolling; is there a reality show in his future?

My, The Democrats Are Desperate!

"Coded language"? What next? The Media Research Center reports: "Appearing as a guest on Thursday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, Matt Taibbi - contributing editor of Rolling Stone magazine - ridiculously accused Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Tea Party activists of racism in the form of using 'coded language' to refer to 'Mexican immigrants and non-white inner city, Democratic-leaning voters' as he responded to a soundbite of Boehner talking about having a social safety net for those unable to work, but that should perhaps exclude those who refuse to help themselves." What's wrong with denying benefits to people who refuse to work? It's about time someone said it, and there's nothing coded about that.

How About Wearing Yellow Stars?

Isn't this disgraceful?

Political Correctness Strikes Again!

This Telegraph column sums up the politically correct sanitizing of Mark Twain. (I wonder if they'll go after "To Kill a Mockingbird" next -- I distinctly remember Scout asking her father what a "nigger-lover" was, and Atticus not only gently telling her not to use that kind of language, but also explaining that he was defending a Negro. Shocking!)

More 'Unexpected' Media Hypocrisy

Here's some more sickening spin to promote the Cult of Obama. More jobless claims are good, higher food and gas prices are shrugged away. Republicans are evil, Democrats are excused. It just infuriates me. (Oh, and speaking of us Republicans, did you hear that the awful Ed Schultz defined us as "bastards that want to destroy the American dream"? Details are here, if you have the stomach to read further.)

LLTV

Andrea Peyser comments on what I call "Lowlife TV": "If you're a little famous, or want to be, shirking responsibility no longer brings a healthy dose of revulsion. Becoming a pathetic loser has transformed into something greater. It's a label to which we all aspire. And the ringmaster for today's multibillion-dollar addiction industry, a guy who's done more to glamorize, enable and make rotten behavior into a lucrative career move, is Dr. Drew Pinsky. Since last month, Dr. Drew has breathed life into narcissistic slobs like Rachel Uchitel, addicted to Tiger Woods; Eric Roberts, addicted to being as famous as his sister, Julia; and plastic-surgery enthusiast Janice Dickinson. The crew craves attention like a narcotic on VH1's train wreck, now in its fourth season, 'Celebrity Rehab.' What happened to decency?"

I Queue

I wonder if people would stand in long lines like this to apply for jobs, instead of wasting money on lottery tickets?

Politically Incorrect Pledge

Here's some pretty depressing news: "The principal of a public school in Brookline, Mass., is asking parents to fill out permission slips before their children can participate in a weekly recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance." What is going on here? I see they are reciting the Pledge only weekly (VERY 'weakly'!) now; we used to say it every morning, with pride, and neither students, teachers, nor parents found it objectionable!

Nope-rah

I have never understood the appeal of Oprah Winfrey, never read a book just because she recommended it, and never bought into the cult, so I really enjoyed reading this reader comment: "We are all sick to death of the Save-Your-Own-Life cello-phaned, commercialized, bogus Everyman Culture, blah-blah stuff Oprah Winfrey has been milking for the past decade. We are sick of her self-involvement, her weight, her friends (both low and high), her mishaps with her Vita-Prep blender, her You Can Squeal in My Audience of Brain Dead Women, her Give-Aways, her bogus good cheer (doesn't look so happy when she's sans makeup, hairdos, designer clothes..and chastising her well fed but brow beaten associates..) Enough. Enough Dr. Oz, Susie  WhatsHerName, Dr. Incredibly Stupid. Enough. Enough promotion, monetizing good cheer, good looks, good food, good weight, mediocre prose and poetry. Enough recycled 'stuff..'"

Oh, The Hypocrisy!

I love the media double standards used in criticizing Governor Chris Christie's handling of the blizzard: "'Most importantly, he could have returned sooner, said Bob Mann, who served as communications director to Louisiana’s former Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco during Hurricane Katrina. 'It boggles the mind that a governor would abandon his state in the midst of a natural disaster,' said Mann, who is now a political communications professor at Louisiana State University. 'He was in Disney World for crying out loud, of all places. That’s the worse image that you could possibly have.'"  No, the worst image you could possibly have is being the President of the United States and extending your Hawaiian vacation!  As usual, it's bad when you're a Republican, but just fine if you're a Democrat.

What Happened on June 17

I've seen a few of the films in ESPN's excellent documentary series "30 for 30", and  this one, titled  "June 17, 1994", was one of the best.   As this article explains, many major sports stories occurred that day, but they were all overshadowed by the police chase of a certain Ford Bronco containing O.J. Simpson.   Hard to believe it was seventeen years ago.

Annoying Words for 2011

Take a look at Lake Superior State University's 36th annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness. Using "Google" as a verb has always annoyed me.

Cosby for Muslims

Katie Couric must be delusional. I like reader comment #18: "Of course that would have to be changed from Doctor father to Bomb making father, lawyer mother would become subservient mother who never questions any decision her husband makes, Their older son who is having troubles at the Madrassai and is trying to find a way to explain to his father why he does not want to become a bomb maker like his father; rather he wants to lead a life of Jihad or perhaps suicide bombing, and daughters that do what they are told without question. When the daughter charachters are no longer needed on the show they could be set up in arranged marriages (if they are 12 or younger) to old guys or they could be killed off in an honor killing episode. They could have cameo appearances by Osama Bin Laden who could give us a heart felt message as to why the infidels must die!"
