Random Thoughts From Thomas Sowell

Here are some random thoughts by Dr. Thomas Sowell, including these:
  • "I know people who are blind or retarded who nevertheless have jobs. So you can imagine how much sympathy I have for able-bodied men who are begging on the streets."
  •  "Franklin D. Roosevelt called December 7, 1941-- when Pearl Harbor was bombed-- "a date that will live in infamy." What should also live in infamy is the time when too many Americans forgot about Pearl Harbor and started wringing their hands with guilt about Hiroshima."

Anti-Israel Sentiment: Nothing Ever Changes

This 40 year old column was sent to me by my aunt. As you can see, nothing has changed in all these years.
=====================================

You probably don't remember the name Eric Hoffer. He was a longshoreman who turned into a philosopher, wrote columns for newspapers and some books. He was a non-Jewish American social philosopher. He was born in 1902 and died in 1983, after writing nine books and winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His first book, The True Believer, published in 1951, was widely recognized as a classic.

ISRAEL'S PECULIAR POSITION...by Eric Hoffer
Los Angeles Times, May 26,1968.
The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it.
Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchman.
Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese and no one says a word about refugees.
But in the case of Israel , the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees.
Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single one.
Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms.
But when Israel is victorious, it must sue for peace.
Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations, when they are defeated, survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed.
Had Nasser triumphed last June [1967], he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on.
There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Blacks are executed in Rhodesia .
But, when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one demonstrated against him.
The Swedes, who were ready to break off diplomatic relations with America because of what we did in Vietnam , did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews.
They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troops in Norway .
The Jews are alone in the world.
If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources.
Yet at this moment, Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally.
We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us.
And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer [1967] had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war, to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us.
Should Israel perish, the Holocaust will be upon us all.

A Meeting of the (Sick) Minds

At Front Page Magazine, I found this take on a recent revolting news story: "Louis Farrakhan – My Dinner with Mahmoud."

Hero of the Day

It's particularly loathsome when criminals attack senior citizens, so I enjoyed this story.

Young Blue Eyes

This is one of the most enjoyable book excerpts I've ever read -- a new biography of Frank Sinatra. I can't wait to get the book!

That's Rich!

Read what Neal Boortz says about wealth envy. I am sick and tired of hearing wealthy individuals and businessmen portrayed as evil, terrible human beings. Maybe if people admired the rich for all they have achieved, they would be earning more than an entitlement check!

More Proof That The U.N. is Useless

I saw this lunacy at Lucianne.com during my lunch break and promptly lost my appetite: "UN 'to appoint space ambassador to greet alien visitors'"

A Column You'll Agree With

Here are some good arguments by Jennifer Rubin.

"Singletasking?!"

I had to laugh at this article from Lifehacker, since I have never had the luxury of "singletasking" at work. But other than this, I often get useful tips from this website.

Seven Reasons To Support Israel

You must watch this ten minute video and pass it on. Until I saw this, I had never heard of Joyce Kaufman -- but I sure want to hear much more of this spunky defender of Israel and America!

Utter Shamelessness

Everything you want to know about Democrats and their desperation: "'Catching Boehner with a mistress is the only way to destroy him politically before the election,' a source said." Oh, how I wish the November elections were being held today!

A Vote For America

WOW!

No Pity For Killers

I don't get all the hoopla over the execution of women. If they kill like men, then they should be executed like men. And there have been some truly brutal crimes lately committed by women, including the SC creature who drowned her kids, and that Indiana "mother" whose children died after she locked them in a closet. So let's save the pity for the victims of these women instead.

Argus Hamilton Quips

Check out Argus Hamilton's take on the news, including this item: "Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at the United Nations in New York Tuesday to address the U.N. General Assembly. He began his speech by declaring that Iran is a free nation and a peaceful nation. It's always best to open with a joke." The United Nations itself is a joke!

"Mourning in America"

This TV ad is both very powerful, and very true.

Meet the F*****s!

My, but the Dems are classy: "The head of the Ohio Democratic Party is brushing off his description of Tea Partiers and other opponents of President Obama’s health care law as “f–kers,” saying he shares a penchant for blurting with Vice President Biden."

Politically Incorrect American Patriotism

I heard this pathetic story on Neal Boortz's radio program last night. Did you know that being patriotic and loving your country are considered 'offensive' to Muslims? And if they are offended, who cares?

Ground Rounds

Grand Rounds Vol 6.52 The Last Edition is on call at Pallimed: A Hospice & Palliative Medicine Blog.

Like President, Like Aunt

How nervy! I guess the entitlement/redistribution of wealth mentality must run in this family: "President Barack Obama's aunt says she has no reason to apologize for accepting public housing and other government assistance even though she hasn't contributed to the system."

New York News

It makes me sick to see this Iranian Hitler in New York.
Speaking of NY, Andrea Peyser has written a good column: "Who will cry for the church at Ground Zero? No one has organized a march urging St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church to rise at the World Trade Center site. And no one has raised a voice to defend the tiny house of worship's right to exist. But all New Yorkers should shout in unison: Bring back St. Nick's!" But St. Nick's isn't politically correct, whereas Muslims are!

Scott of the Antarctic: The Movie

After reading about Captain Scott of the Antarctic for so long, I'd sure love to see this exhibit! The video clip seen here, along with the accompanying music, is haunting.

ObamaSpeak

Check out Nealz Nuze for a primer on ObamaSpeak. For example, "'The War on Terror' became an 'Overseas Contingency Operation.' 'Welfare checks' became 'tax cuts.' 'Illegal immigrants' became 'undocumented workers.' and 'The Bush tax cuts' became 'the Obama tax cuts for the middle class.'"

Annoying Fads

Reader's Digest lists 13 fads that have got to go, including some of my own pet peeves, such as the misuse of the word "awesome"; hideously spelled/pronounced baby names; and morons using their cell phones while in a bathroom stall. (From Interesting Pile)

Bush Vs. Obama

Victor Davis Hanson is "Rethinking George Bush": "The frenzy of Bush hatred and Obama worship that crested in the summer of 2008 is over. We now better remember the Bush at Ground Zero with a megaphone and his arm around a fireman than the Texan who pronounced 'nuclear' as 'nucular.' Meanwhile, hope-and-change now seems to offer little hope and less change. America woke up from its 2008 trance and is concluding that Bush was never as bad, and Obama never as good, as advertised." Plus, Bush loved his country and didn't set out to "fundamentally change" it the way Obama has done.

It's Not Nice To Use a Device

I'm all for this idea: "Can ordinarily secular and non-Orthodox Jews turn off their cell phones for Yom Kippur? Can they resist hiding their BlackBerrys under their prayer books? Can they thwart the urge to take a 'bathroom break' during services when they feel compelled to check a new text? A national campaign is urging Jews, and all Americans, to make Yom Kippur, beginning at sunset Sept. 17, 'No-Device Day,' a time to take a break from technology and reconnect with family and community the old-fashioned way: by talking face to face."

This and That

I don't like appeasers, so this story really irritated me! Betsy's been Crusing the Web for the latest interesting tidbits, while Argus Hamilton offers his take on the news, including this item that made me laugh: "Pete Rose was cheered at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park Sunday on the anniversary of his breaking Ty Cobb's hits record. He stood at first base and wept openly. He lost ten thousand dollars betting that Major League Baseball would never let him on the field."

Compare and Contrast

Barking Moonbat Early Warning System does a great job contrasting British welfare recipients with WW2 war heroes. While the heroes made great sacrifices for their country, the "moochers", as Neal Boortz calls them, aren't even satisfied with the benefits they get. What a downfall from the greatest generation to the laziest!

"If...You Must" for 9/15/10

Time once again for another interesting installment of Soccer Dad's series "If...You Must".

Let's Stop Apologizing Already!

Marilyn Penn has a good editorial at Political Mavens: "All positions have been stated, embellished and some have been willfully distorted by those who know better into an example of religious intolerance, when in fact, there are thousands of mosques in America and millions of Muslims are gainfully employed and treated equally to people of other faiths. The myth of Islamophobia is a manufactured one and far from creating sensitivity training in schools as some Muslims have insisted, there needs to be sensitivity training for Muslims concerning the devastating debacle we all sustained during 9/11 and the recognition that in its aftermath, some of our Muslim citizens were demonstrably overjoyed by this event." Isn't it about time we stopped bending over backwards to please these people?

Appreciating President George W. Bush

The name of this American Digest post is "Something Wonderful: When Our President Was a Man", and it shows George W. Bush's speech at National Cathedral on 9/14/01. What it doesn't show, but which I remember vividly, was when he returned to the pew and sat down, his father reached over to him and patted him with evident pride.

National Punctuation Day

September 24 is National Punctuation Day!!!

I'll Get You, My Pretty!

Have you seen this political ad with Nancy Pelosi as the Wicked Witch of the West? I wish we could throw water on Obama, too!

Oops!

From the "Give Credit Where Credit is Due" department: the Time magazine post that I attributed to Soccer Dad was actually that of Elder of Zion. Sorry about that!

"Living The Good Life"

Read Greg Crosby for his take on that Time magazine cover story: "The story's basic premise, written by Karl Vick, is that Israelis don't care about peace because they're too busy living the good life. Yeah, that's right, the good life. Living in fear of annihilation every single day, that's the good life, right? The possibility of war at any time, terrorist attacks that might happen at the grocery store, meat market or night club, or even at a wedding - sure, that's some good life. Living in a place where you're surrounded by tens of millions of people who want to see you wiped off the face of the earth - now why would anyone want peace under those conditions?"

Time for Antisemitism

Better late than never, here is Soccer Dad's clever response to Time magazine's antisemitic cover story.

Never Forget

The New York Daily News published this list of all the victims from September 11, 2001. It's thirty-three pages long. Remember this list whenever the imam has the temerity to make threats and ultimatums against us.

Watcher's Council Winners

Soccer Dad offers us the latest Watcher's Council Winners.

First Jewish Service on Nazi Soil

My sister sent me this extremely moving First Jewish Broadcast on Nazi Soil - 1944.

The Religion of Appease

Notice that the Pope and the President, who involved themselves in the fray over that lunatic pastor's threat to burn the Koran, have been silent in regards to this Imam's threat against Americans. What sickening politically correct hypocrisy!

SEPTEMBER 11, 2010

In memory of Edward F. Beyea; remembering "the falling man"; and never for one moment forgetting all the innocent victims of the most unforgivable terrorist attack on our soil.

Remembering

I think all of us can remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard about the first plane, and the shock and disbelief that followed. For years afterward, it always seemed to be 8:46 on the clock when I arrived at work, so I started coming in earlier.
These are notes made on 9/11/01 by American Digest's Gerald Vanderleun. Michelle Malkin has some links of remembrance. The documentary "102 Minutes that Changed America" is on the History Channel at 9 tonight. And there's much to read at RIGHTNETWORK.

Here's the hero of the day, as heard on Neal Boortz's radio show just now. I'd love to see this sign more often!

This right here is the best memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks.

We Miss W!

Here's yet another article explaining why we miss President George W. Bush.

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds, Vol.6, No. 50: Take Me Out to the Ball Game is underway at Musings of a Dinosaur.

The Arf-ul Obama

I got a kick out of this comment on Obama's petulant remark: "If by 'like a dog' Obama means that every one year of his presidency feels like seven, I’m forced to agree with him."

Muslims as Victims

I am sick and tired of seeing the recent spate of propaganda articles like this one, which says, "September 11 anniversaries have always been challenging for US Muslims, who have been under scrutiny since the attacks." How about more articles about how the September 11 anniversaries haven't exactly been pleasant for the friends and families of the 3,000 who were murdered?

The Case of the Vanishing Story

Here's American Digest on the recent terrorism dry run that has vanished too quickly from the news.

Political Correctness is a Killer

It's a real shame we have to keep explaining ourselves over and over again, but Betsey nails it in her introduction: "Yes, we do have enemies, Daniel Gordis has an article in the Jerusalem Post about what Americans can learn from Israel - we need to learn that yes, we do have enemies. And no matter how politically correct we want to be, we forget this at our peril."

"If...You Must" for 9/2/10

Here's another in Soccer Dad's informative series.

Holocaustophobia

I found this outrageous story at Neals Nuze: "A history teacher has been suspended in France for spending too much time teaching students about the Holocaust."
