The passengers and crew of Flight 93 were the first to fight back against the September 11 terrorists. Because they were able to talk to their loved ones by phone, they knew about the attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. And so they decided to fight back any way they could.
You probably already know the names Todd Beamer, Jeremy Glick, Mark Bingham and Thomas Burnett from the TV documentaries. And you know what Beamer said on the phone right before he and the others decided to act: "Let's roll".
This is the website of the Flight 93 National Memorial. Click on a name to find out more about each individual whose bravery and sacrifice helped keep their flight from crashing into the U.S. Capital or the White House and doing even more damage.
I have always wondered how many more lives would have been lost and how our country would have possibly recovered if these 40 heroic souls had not fought back that day.
