Well, as everyone knows by now, Barry Bonds has broken Aaron's record, but it's tainted, and I find I can't care much at all. I just wish the record could have been broken by someone more likeable and with more integrity: my old hero Carl Yastrzemski, or Frank Robinson, or Cal Ripken, or Ken Griffey, Jr., those genuinely admired and even loved. This article asks, "Where have all the heroes gone?"

Are you originally from New England? We lived in Springfield Mass for about 5 years and it was then that I started discovering baseball. Yaz was my hero.
Then we moved to Baltimore and I wondered if I could still root for the Red Sox. Of course in 1968 the Orioles were on their way up with Brooks, Frank, Boog and Jim so I became an Orioles' fan without looking back.
I'm a little skeptical of those who make a huge issue of the steroids. Gaylord Perry's in the Hall of Fame and he doctored balls. That Barry Bonds is a jerk is a different matter.
There used to be this very funny Cal Ripken Barry Bonds commercial, though I forget for what. In the end Cal's wearing this outrageous earring and asks Barry if he thinks his father would like it. Or something like that.
Here's a reference to that commercial.
