The Civil War
After hearing that Ken Burns' masterpiece "The Civil War" will be on TV this week to mark the 150th anniversary of that battle, I just had to listen to another reading of the letter from Sullivan Ballou to his wife. David McCullough's narration, the "Ashokan Farewell" music, and the photographs shown to accompany the letter blended just perfectly. (Note: this YouTube video has sound with a black screen) I have seen "The Civil War" at least 10 times by now, and it's always the best thing on the air. Some of the more memorable parts include 104 year old Daisy Turner reciting a poem by heart; and Shelby Foote.
