HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I first saw this prayer years ago for Rosh Hashanah. It's still appropriate now!

"A Jewish Prayer for the New Year
Dear Lord:

May we get a clean bill of health from our dentist, our psychiatrist, our ophthalmologist, our cardiologist, our gastroenterologist, our urologist, our proctologist, our gynecologist, our podiatrist, our plumber and the IRS.

May our hair, our teeth, our facelift, our abs, our honey cakes, and our stocks not fall and may our blood pressure, our triglycerides, our cholesterol, our white blood count, our weight and our mortgage interest rates not rise.

May we find a way to travel from anywhere to anywhere in the rush hour in less than an hour and when we get there, may we find a parking space.May we all relax about the third millennium of the common era, and realize that we still have 239 years until the down of the sixth millennium of the Hebrew calendar by which time the computer will be long since obsolete and so will we.

May G-d give us the strength to get through this presidential campaign and may some of the promises made be kept. May we believe at least half of what the candidates propose and may those elected fulfill at least half of what they promise and may the miracle of reducing taxes and balancing budgets come to pass.

May we be awestruck by God's sense of humor as we realize that a professional wrestler could have become president of the United States and that an Orthodox Jew has risen to prominence in American politics while remaining true to his Jewish roots. It is my belief that God's joyous humor is the reason he really does not want us to touch our toes while exercising or he would have put them further up our bodies; and, the reason so many of us take up jogging is to hear heavy breathing again.

May what we see in the mirror delight us and what others see in us, delight them. May someone, as well as God, love us enough to forgive our faults, be blind to our blemishes and tell the world about our virtues.

May the telemarketers wait until after we finish dinner to call us. May our checkbooks and budgets balance and may they include generous amounts for charity.

May we remember to say "I love you" at least once a day to our spouse, our child, our parent, all of our significant others but not our boss, our intern, our nurse, our masseur, our hairdresser or our tennis instructor.

And may the Messiah come this year, and if he does not, may we live as if he has, in a world at peace, with awareness of God's love in every sunset, flower, baby's smile, lover's kiss, and every wonderful astonishing beat of our heart. May we smile and laugh throughout the year."

Notwithstanding that Ron Paul is in the lead in Iowa, I believe Republicans will do what is morally right and reject him, and select one of the other Republican candidates".

Raucus Caucus

The closer we get to the Iowa caucuses, the more nauseous I feel.  I have never considered Ron Paul to be a Republican at all and think he's in the race as the spoiler -- and he's doing a good job of it, too!  Read this Byron York piece, courtesy of Instapundit.  Paul and Obama are equally dreadful candidates, and it's very frightening to think that this is the best the Republicans can come up with in such a critical Presidential race. Let's hope the other candidates have some good vice-presidential choices in mind that may help turn the tide in their favor. As Argus Hamilton quips, "President Obama enjoyed a five-point jump in the Gallup Poll Thursday in his largest weekly approval gain. No one thought he could get re-elected a year ago. Things were looking pretty bad for President Obama until the Republicans began putting up candidates."

This is a clever cartoon combining the famous leg lamp with the sneakers that created a disgraceful frenzy. By the way, don't people get tired of shopping? I saw another bumper-to-bumper miles-long traffic jam headed for the Mall today. A month from now, I'd like to see a chart comparing what people charged this Christmas compared to what they actually pay on their credit card bills.

Sneaker Stampede Stupidity

More on yesterday's utterly disgraceful sneaker stampede. The last line of this column by Kelly Dwyer was quoted on ESPN radio this morning.

"Michael Jordan fans and a whole lot of utter and absolute morons descended upon malls across America early Friday morning to push each other over and destroy property in order to buy some basketball shoes.
The re-release of the Air Jordan 11 can hardly be called a 're-release,' because Nike and Jordan Brand attempted (and succeeded) to dish up some needless hype and intrigue by only releasing 100 pairs of the shoes to certain stores. Twenty-five years into this game, both companies knew that the limited supply would result in long lines and potential chaos as shoppers attempted to grab a pair, but Nike and Jordan Brand haven't always been on the cutting edge when it comes to caring about anything more than the bottom line, have they?
Why care, when you can drive people to this, as reported by ABC:
    Police had to smash the windows of a car to get two toddlers out after a woman had left them there to go buy the shoes. She was taken into custody when she returned, according to the AP.
The Indianapolis Star was at one particularly ugly scene:
    'The door broke and was hanging by a hinge and people were squeezing in anyway,' Asia Coates said 'People were falling down.'
    She said one woman was knocked down, got back up and was the second person to buy the shoes.
    Andre Mitchell, 28, Indianapolis, said he stepped over downed shoppers. 'It wasn't personal, it was business,' Mitchell explained.
No, it's not business. You're just a moron."

What I find appalling is that people are blaming Michael Jordan, Nike, and the shoe stores but not blaming these thugs themselves! Nobody forced them to buy these shoes. some commenters are blaming "the rich" for buying the sneakers. Excuse me, but these stampeders didn't exactly resemble Wall Street bankers. Also, someone ought to ask them how wasting money on sneakers is going to improve their lives. I doubt hiring managers will be impressed when you show up at an interview wearing these. And please, don't insult our intelligence by complaining about how poor and hungry you are.

Thomas Sowell on Newt Gingrich

Read this column. He writes: 

"Those who want to concentrate on the baggage in Newt Gingrich's past, rather than on the nation's future, should remember what Winston Churchill said: 'If the past sits in judgment on the present, the future will be lost.' If that means a second term for Barack Obama, then it means lost big time."

I agree, and I've been leaning towards Gingrich myself, because of his accomplishments in the past, and also because he can hold his own in debates with Obama.  It reminds me of 2008 when we voted for McCain not because he was the greatest candidate, but because he was the best alternative to Obama.  Right now, the candidates should stop bickering and agree that their enemy (and this country's enemy) is Obama, not one another.

Here's a very good article about our entitlement mentality, via Instapundit.  Unfortunately, if you think like this in a liberal office, you don't dare express yourself; they think poverty is the fault of the rich, they never blame Obama, and they never hold the people responsible for their own condition. This is another reason why the Republicans had better stop attacking each other and start demanding personal responsibility and a return to the work ethic by the American people, and an end to the EPA regulations that are strangling this country and giving people an excuse not to work.

Hammerman has indulged his inner Father-Coughlin-in-reverse by proclaiming that if Tim Tebow wins the Super Bowl, why, Christians will go on a rampage that will result in the burning of mosques and the bashing of gays. Now, are you ready for some football?"

Tebow Time

Here's a round-up of Tim Tebow stories. I had to laugh last night when ESPN's  Chris Berman, Tom Jackson & Trent Dilfer couldn't find words to explain the Tim Tebow phenomenon of last-minute wins, but Berman compared the mystery to that of the Bermuda Triangle, UFOs, and the Loch Ness Monster!  I think that basically, Tebow proves that it's not how you win or lose, it's how you play the game, and that character still counts.

Over at Betsy's Page there's a list of the divisive words used by Obama in his latest "the rich are evil" speech.  This alone should leave no doubt as to his socialist agenda and to the fact that he is encouraging, if not inciting, the Occupy movement. The Republican candidates must stop fighting one another and start uniting to defeat this man.

Ugh, here we go again. Baseball player  Ryan Braun has tested positive for steroids. It's an embarrassment for baseball, and an embarrassment for Jews. Nothing is worse than winning by cheating.  He should be stripped of his MVP status immediately.

The American Spectator quotes Golda Meir: "There were no such thing as Palestinians. When was there an independent Palestinian people with a Palestinian state? It was either southern Syria before the First World War, and then it was a Palestine including Jordan. It was not as though there was a Palestinian people in Palestine considering itself as a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country away from them. They did not exist."

Justice is Served

I don't want to hear the excuses or the protests from the anti-death penalty crowd. Both of these vicious animals should be executed as soon as possible, and in the exact same manner as their helpless victims.  Killers like this don't deserve to live another day, but they'll probably end up sitting on Death Row for 20 years at taxpayer expense.

A Danger at Home and Abroad

Since the Republicans don't do it often enough, we must continue to attack Obama for his dangerous policies. Suzanne Fields says, "Jewish voters, many of whom are still enamored of the president, might think long and hard about how their man actually regards what's at stake in the Middle East, and how he might deal with Israel if he is re-elected and no longer has to worry about running for office or campaign money from the Jews."

When I read things like this, it makes me even angrier to hear the moral equivalency argument used when critics say, "But look at how we interred the Japanese!" Yes, but at least we didn't massacre them!

Antisemitism in the News

Now I've heard everything: "The U.S. ambassador to Belgium, Howard Gutman, recently told a conference hosted by the European Jewish Union that Israel is to blame for growing anti-Semitism harbored by people of Muslim faith."  Also, did you know that the adjective "Israeli" is politically incorrect? I look at MarketWatch every day to check the stock market, and when I saw the glowing headlines there today, I felt the same as Don Surber in his column: "8.6% unemployment? Baloney". The headlines, which I printed out earlier, said this: "Jobless rate falls to 8.6%. U.S. economy not headed for recession. U.S. jobs picture changed forever." Right.
