This sad, sad story by David Goldstein reminded me of the stories in Daniel Mendelsohn's "The Lost" and shows the shared experiences of so many Jews.   It's called "Portrait of Papa as a Young Man. In my grandfather’s village, I found the man he’d been before memories of the Holocaust destroyed him"
