I got a kick out of this article about the noble but failed mission of John Richards and his Apostrophe Protection Society. The title is "Former copy editor, 96, ends his battle to put the apostrophe in its correct place, saying 'ignorance and laziness' have won." Unfortunately, he's right about that.
The trouble isn't only with apostrophes and commas; bad grammar and spelling also seem to be the norm. I cringe when I hear things like "I seen her" and "He should of went", and when I see misspellings and grammatical errors in resumes sent by people with self-described "excellent communication skills." I guess people no longer care about first impressions being important.
