Good Friday Links

Daniel Greenfield's Friday Afternoon Roundup today is subtitled "Help educate a liberal."

The main story at Larwyn's Linx is Harry Reid called on to apologize for stating suffering Americans are liars.  How this hideous man keeps getting reelected is beyond me.

The Council has spoken! Here are the latest Watcher's Council winners.

Frighteningly Familiar

It makes you very uneasy to see headlines like this one: Ukraine Jews hunkering down.  "KIEV — The turmoil in Ukraine has left one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities on edge. After an outbreak of violence in Kiev last week that left dozens of protesters and policemen dead, President Viktor Yanukovych fled the capital and parliament installed an interim leader to take the still-contested reins of power. Like their compatriots, Ukraine’s Jews are waiting to see what the future holds for their country, but with the added fear that they could become targets amid the chaos."  There's talk of an evacuation to Israel, which is good, but all this is still haunting.

Proud to be Jewish

Here's a video that every American Jew should pass along. American Thinker's title is "Ben Shapiro Crashes Jew Hating UCLA Student Group", but it should say "Ben Shapiro Defends Israel and Castigates Antisemites."  It made me proud to be Jewish.  See more here.

The BDS in Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions should really stand for Bigotry, Derangement, and Stupidity.

Lots 'o Links

There's so much going on in the news that it's a relief we have it all in a few reliable places, like Betsy's Page, Maggie's Farm, and Larwyn's Linx!  The news that Ronan Farrow received a Cronkite Award after only 3 days on the air is reminiscent of Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize after only a few months as President!

Eating for Obamacare

Unbelievable! "Now on your restaurant bill: Obamacare fee." They must think everyone is meekly going to go along with this. I for one would refuse to pay this fee, and any other Obamacare fees I find stealthily inserted into my bills.

Please Stop Already!

Excuse me, but do I have to be bombarded with gay propaganda every single day, even when all I want to do is watch or listen to the sports highlights?  Also, I'm sorry, but I don't understand why anyone should find it worth celebrating that men are announcing that they have sex with other men, or women with women. The more they celebrate and write articles extolling the gay lifestyle, the less anyone is mentioning AIDS. Or is it sexist (or whatever the "ism" is for this) to even bring this up anymore?

Downplaying Jihadist Slaughter

If it reflects badly on Obama, or if it reflects badly on Muslims, the mainstream media is loathe to report it. That's why you don't know about atrocities like this, reported at Jihad Watch: "Nigerian students trying to escape college attack were 'slaughtered like sheep' by Islamic jihadists who slit their throats.  Remember: when you hear Leftists and Islamic supremacists going on about 'Islamophobia' demonizing those who call attention to atrocities like this, this is what they are enabling: students burned alive, and having their throats slit when they tried to escape. This is, apparently, what the 'Islamophobia' industry — the real one that pushes the concept, not the counter-jihad one that Hamas-linked CAIR imagines to exist — wants to see: heaps of dead Infidel bodies."  If you recall, the first reports of Holocaust atrocities were barely reported, too.

Israel's Plight, in a Nutshell

"Israeli Economy Minister Naftali Bennett on Tuesday turned the tables in an interview on BBC’s Hard Talk when he asked host Stephen Sackur, 'Would you hand over half of Britain to someone who keeps on killing you?'" It's about time someone speaks out like this!

Powerless

In the daily onslaught of disgraceful news coming from the Obama Administration, this tweet from Samantha Power blaming Daniel Pearl for his own beheading couldn't have come as any surprise.  Thanks to the likes of Obama, Kerry, Hagel, and Power, our enemies must be rejoicing.

Haveil Havalim Time!

Havel Havelim Blog Carnival: Of Springtime, T’fillin, and Politics as Usual, is up at A Damaged Mirror. Because I rarely use Facebook, I can't seem to find a reliable way to link to each edition of HH, but I'm sure happy whenever and wherever I find it!

Stop The Insanity

Peter Wehner at Commentary says this about America's decline: "What is different is that Barack Obama isn’t on the faculty of Columbia; he’s commander in chief of the United States. Which means that his misguided views are downright pernicious. And for all the damage the president is doing on the domestic side–and I would not want to underestimate it for a moment–it may be the harm he’s inflicting on America in foreign policy and national security is deeper, broader, and more durable.
More than any president in my lifetime, Barack Obama has damaged virtually everything he’s touched. When it comes to American interests, he’s a one-man wrecking ball."

Old Nazis Never Die

They just keep getting older. Here's a recent headline: "Germany arrests three suspected Auschwitz guards — aged 88, 92 and 94 — and uncovers Nazi documents."  They ought to list the ages of the Jewish victims they slaughtered -- infants, young women, senior citizens -- who didn't get to live to their 90s.

"Holocaust Amnesia"

Read Michael Freund, who writes about European antisemitism:

"What we are witnessing is a trend as dangerous as it is regrettable: barely seven decades after murdering its Jews, Europe is emerging out from under its sense of guilt and historical responsibility.

As the Holocaust recedes from peoples’ memories, Europeans feel freer than before to lambast Israel and to treat it with breathtaking hypocrisy.

In addition, this development has allowed ancient hatreds to surface once again, prompting a new and frightening wave of anti-Semitism across the continent.

Sure, Europe has taken the lead in declaring January 27 an international day of Holocaust remembrance. But there are signs that even this annual commemoration is being stripped of any Jewish elements.

In her official statement to mark the day, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton omitted any mention of Jewish victims, instead calling for people to 'remain vigilant against the dangers of hate speech and redouble our commitment to prevent any form of intolerance.'

Can you imagine issuing a statement about the Holocaust yet failing to mention the holy six million Jewish souls who perished in the inferno?

This isn’t Holocaust denial – it is Holocaust amnesia.

Consciously or not, Europe is forgetting the recent past, casting aside the genocide and turning up the heat against Israel and the Jewish people."

---------------------------

Here's another ominous headline:  "Breaking News: ‘Jews Should Flee Ukraine’ Says Chief Ukrainian Rabbi." Will the past be repeating itself there?
Home » InDepth » Columns » Fundamentally Freund/Michael Freund » Europe’s Holocaust Amnesia By: Michael Freund Published: February 20th, 2014 print tell a friend Michael Freund Michael Freund Last week, European Parliament president Martin Schulz ascended the podium at the Knesset in Jerusalem and managed to make a fool not only of himself but of the continent he represents. Speaking in his native German, Schulz used the opportunity to blast Israel for its policies vis-à-vis Judea, Samaria and Gaza, prompting several Israeli government ministers and parliamentarians to walk out in protest. Mindlessly repeating false statistics about the gap in water usage between Jews and Palestinians, Schulz unwittingly revealed just how gullible Europe is when it comes to taking Arab propaganda at face value. After a Palestinian he met told him Israelis are allocated more than four times the water he receives, Schulz dutifully repeated the untruth in his parliamentary address. Regardless of whether he checked his facts or not, Schulz comes out looking bad. Indeed, in one fell swoop he demonstrated that European policymakers are sufficiently anti-Israel that they will believe just about anything that paints the Jewish state in an unfavorable light. Moreover, he laid bare the vestiges of medieval anti-Semitism that continue to influence the attitudes of many European decision-makers toward Israel. As the late Joshua Trachtenberg pointed out more than seven decades ago in his seminal work, The Devil and the Jews: The Medieval Conception of the Jew and Its Relation to Modern Anti-Semitism, many Europeans held deep-seated and hateful beliefs about their Jewish neighbors, including that they would poison the wells. Now, in a modern-day twist on that conception, Europeans seem to think that rather than polluting the wells, the Jews now monopolize them instead. Talk about the power of a lie. As Trachtenberg noted, “the lie is a more potent weapon, skillfully wielded, than the bare and simple truth…. For the lie can be molded to match the ‘will to believe’; the truth is made of less malleable stuff.” The Schulz affair, taken together with other recent incidents involving European hostility toward Israel, also suggests a significant shift is well underway in how the continent relates to the Jewish state. Earlier this month, the speaker of the Danish parliament chose to visit the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and the Hamas regime in Gaza, but skipped over Israel in what can only be described as an insolent snub. Rather than standing with democratic Israel, democratic Denmark seems to prefer the company of Hamas hoodlums and PLO plutocrats. And in another sign of mounting European duplicity, two of the most important financial institutions in northern Europe, the Swedish Nordea Bank and the Norwegian Danske Bank, announced they would boycott their Israeli counterparts because they operate in the “occupied territories.” What we are witnessing is a trend as dangerous as it is regrettable: barely seven decades after murdering its Jews, Europe is emerging out from under its sense of guilt and historical responsibility. In her official statement to mark the day, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton omitted any mention of Jewish victims, instead calling for people to “remain vigilant against the dangers of hate speech and redouble our commitment to prevent any form of intolerance.” Can you imagine issuing a statement about the Holocaust yet failing to mention the holy six million Jewish souls who perished in the inferno? This isn’t Holocaust denial – it is Holocaust amnesia.

The Overdue Extolling of Work

Work is a beautiful thing. And so is this commercial, which should be shown over and over between now and the next election.

Blowing a Lot of Smoke

What a juxtaposition!  Here are two articles that leave you shaking your head. "Sebelius Denies Well-Documented ObamaCare Joblessness", and "Legal marijuana revenue exceeding expectations."  Isn't this embarrassing?  Imagine the CO governor boasting that pot "sales and excise taxes next fiscal year would produce some $98 million, well above a $70 million estimate given to voters when they approved the pot taxes last year."   What a great achievement from a country that used to be the #1 superpower!  So, I guess the Democrats should focus on marijuana rather than jobs, creating businesses, and repealing Obamacare, and the low information voters should focus on smoking pot & not working.

Peruse the latest news at Maggie's Farm, at Betsy's Page, and at Larwyn's Linx. Every day since Obama's unfortunately been President, it's harder and harder to believe what you're hearing and reading.

What Passes for Adults These Days

Here's another example of the infantilization of American adults, and what passes for "the new normal."  We've heard of irresponsible people taking grinning self-portraits at inappropriate places like funeral parlors, at Auschwitz, etc.   We've seen people old enough to know better, like Geraldo Rivera and Anthony Weiner, taking nude selfies (how I hate that word!) and posting them for all to see.  Now we even have members of the military, who are supposed to be in charge of protecting our country, acting like disrespectful, immature fools. What a terrible message this sends around the world! For some reason, only one of these so-called soldiers has been suspended. I know it's too much to ask, but how about getting off your cell phone and off Facebook, and go do your job!

Terror Threats

Airlines are being warned about potential shoe bombers.  Gee, and I thought Al Qaeda was on the run and that there was no such thing as terrorism! To quote Hillary, "What difference does it make?"

Patricia McCarthy calls the damage Obama has caused "executive sabotage."  Read her column and you'll agree.

Eye-Eye, Sir!

Here's a welcome laugh from Jeanne Moos, whose tone of voice always makes her segments so enjoyable.

The Obama Administration: Full of Hot Air

I didn't even post this John Kerry story yesterday because I was waiting to hear that it was some sort of joke. Unfortunately, it's no joke: he actually compared global warming to to the threat from terrorism and said it's "the greatest challenge of our generation".  Yes, I'm sure Israel would agree with that!

An appalled Ben Stein writes, "Really? Is burning coal worse than burning Jews? Is the internal combustion engine as deadly as the atom bomb? Is burning natural gas as bad as the machine gun at Ypres?"

Newt Gingrich is calling for Kerry's resignation.  I agree with him. But if Hillary Clinton didn't have the decency to resign over Benghazi, how can you expect Kerry to resign over his disgraceful remarks?

The End of "Wholesomeness"

I like this editorial and accompanying cartoon by Jeff Darcy: "What's been lost with Shirley Temple, Sid Caesar and Waltons dad."

The Reality Televisionization of America

I agree with the New York Times regarding the NBC interview with Bode Miller.  It was so uncomfortably intrusive I had to turn the station.  Instead of letting decency and discretion suffice, today's "journalists" must resort to provoking feelings for ratings. It's too bad.

Also, most people watch the Olympics for the sports, not for the back story. If you want strong emotions, go watch Jerry Springer or Maury Povich.

Work or Shirk

Scott Atlas asks, "When Will the Backlash Occur?"  He writes, "Instead of being part of the remarkably productive American workforce, a labor force that has served as the model for the free world, millions of American families will become newly dependent on government subsidies and will exit from the workforce.

Yet, as we should have expected, the Obama administration and its mouthpieces somehow keep spinning this awful news into something positive. White House economist Jason Furman said it gives people new freedom, liberating them from full-time jobs with their long working hours to spend more time with their families. Obama Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that people won’t be 'trapped' in their jobs. And the New York Times editorial board joined in, claiming that reducing the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade 'is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law.'

Eerily reminiscent of Orwell’s 1984 where a new word blackwhite meant 'a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this … the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary,'  supporters of ObamaCare seem to have swallowed the president’s narrative about the ACA, illogical and distorted, indeed destructive to the very foundation of American society, as it is."

Lucianne's comment to Atlas' headline is "Millions liberated from full-time work have no place to sell their poems, sculpture and macrame". Check out the reader comments here.

What continues to outrage me is that people assume that the rest of us who still do work are willing to meekly go along with this scheme and pay more to support these parasites! Well, we're not.  I have an idea: create a tax for ultra-liberals only, or a United Way campaign for shirkers, and let those true believers take care of them.

More Good Friday Links

Here's Daniel Greenfield's Friday Afternoon Roundup.  Check out the Republicans' Valentine Day cards, along with these.  I love the classy Jaguar commercial -- "it's good to be bad". See the full-screen version here.

Great sportsmanship by the Americans in Sochi. When you don't win a medal, blame someone else, like your costume designer.

Why aren't working Americans outraged by sentiment like this? "Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue says in an op-ed that the U.S. needs more low-skill immigration because Americans are not 'qualified' or 'willing' to do such work."  I got a better idea. If you're "not willing" to work, you should immediately lose your welfare, your food stamps, and your disability payments. Refusing to work shouldn't be rewarded with taxpayer money, and I am "not willing" to support or enable you and the immigrants we don't need!

"Good Night, Daddy"

That's number three. Ralph Waite, who played John Walton so wonderfully, just died.  "The Waltons" was one of my favorite TV shows, and his portrayal of the father made me love that family even more.

The Rolling Stones Gather No Antisemites

Let's hope the Stones don't listen to these idiots telling them to boycott Israel, and that they show the spine that the Roger Waters-types lack.

RIP Sid Caesar

A great comic genius has died. I loved him in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", and this skit from "Your Show of Shows" is one of his best. It definitely was the Golden Age of television:

What The Silent Majority is Afraid to Say

It's about time!  Ross Kaminsky asks the question I've been asking myself: "Must same-sex news be all that's fit to print?" Enough already!  This obvious propaganda deluge is very annoying, especially the accolades over that football player (and previously, the basketball player) who announced he was a homosexual and was greeted with effusive praise by Michelle Obama, as if he had found a cure for cancer.  Kaminsky writes, "it’s time for the media to stop beating us over the head with tiresome politically correct gay-related puffery. How about this: Don’t write any story about a gay person that you wouldn’t write about a straight person. If you’re proud of a soldier or athlete or politician, it should be for his soldiering or athleticism or cutting our taxes, respectively, and not because Bill sleeps with Ted or Thelma is hot for Louise."  Amen to that. Thanks to political correctness, the silent majority can't say things like this..

Where's The Protest March For This?

The Brookings Institute has the embarrassing news that more than 1 in 6 men between 25 and 54 is without a job.  "Charles Murray, the libertarian political scientist at the American Enterprise Institute, says treating the epidemic of idleness requires a broader change in the culture. 'You can’t praise the people who do work unless you stigmatize those who don’t,' he says. 'We need to celebrate the value of having a job and earning your own way and say, ‘This is part of being a man.’". (Cartoon by Ramirez)

Shirley Temple

Read Ed Morrissey's tribute to the most talented and uplifting child star ever: "Normally the passing of a film star of that era of natural causes would not be news, but this was no ordinary film star, either. Shirley Temple became an icon during the Depression of hope and optimism, and her cultural impact during that period and for decades afterward cannot be overestimated."

Masha Leon relates how Shirley Temple indirectly helped her come to America from Poland.

Going Out With a Bang

Here's some poetic justice from the New York Times:  "BAGHDAD — If there were such a thing, it would probably be rule No. 1 in the teaching manual for instructors of aspiring suicide bombers: Don’t give lessons with live explosives. In what represented a cautionary tale for terrorist teachers, and a cause of dark humor for ordinary Iraqis, a commander at a secluded terrorist training camp north of Baghdad unwittingly used a belt packed with explosives while conducting a demonstration early Monday for a group of militants, killing himself and 21 other members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, army and police officials said."

No Jobs is Good Jobs

It's amazing that the Democrats can spin this bad news with a straight face.   (Cartoon by Gary Varvel.)

Sweep Success

Reg Henry on the Olympics: "The epitome of made-up sports is curling. Let me just devastatingly observe: They use brooms in curling. Brooms should have no place in sports this side of witch racing. It's ridiculous. That just goes to show that the origins of that alleged sport were just a bunch of guys playing on a pond when they should have been sweeping rocks out of their kitchens as their wives told them to.   If ordinary winter activities are going to be made Olympic sports, why stop there? How about making sidewalk shoveling an Olympic event? Riding inner tubes down slopes? And, my personal favorite, paddle tennis?"

Read The Jewish Press!

If the reason Phyllis Chesler was detained at JFK is true, we're in worse shape than I thought.  "Noted Author Reading The Jewish Press Detained at JFK.  Had the situation been reversed, had a Muslim woman been stopped and her luggage searched simply because she was reading Islamic materials, it would be front page news and the subject of civil rights rallies."  The comment by reader Sara Springer is perfect: "Everyone traveling needs to have a copy of the Jewish Press. Drive the TSA crazy. Has this article been sent to all the major Jewish organizations? The JP, or someone, should send it as a press release demanding Jewish organizations respond. There must be push back for this. We are too quiet."

Role Model

I was glad to see this nice article about Taylor Swift in the UK Telegraph. When exhibitionists like the Kardashians, Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and others dominate the news, it's about time someone stand up for the decent girls.

Mini-Movie

What a wonderful commercial this is, courtesy of American Digest! This 2-minute ad has a better plot and finer acting than most 2-hour movies in theaters today!

The Disappearing Value of Hard Work

Read this Larry Kudlow column, and  also read the comments. I like this one by Kurt NY:  "I have no particular issue with someone choosing not to work extra hours to qualify for employer-based health care should they have the resources to pay for that insurance on their own - it's just everyday prioritizing. However, if what we are talking about (and, for the most part, we are), is someone choosing not to work those hours because someone else will be paying that health insurance bill, that is not freeing, it's parasitism. Sure, you are 'free' not to work those hours, but someone else has to pay more taxes to pay the bill for you." (Cartoon by Michael Ramirez.)

Winning Under Attack

I have been perplexed to have seen headlines similar to this one this week: "Bad Boy of ‘Jeopardy,’ Arthur Chu, Refuses to Apologize — Should He?" Apologize?! Apologize for what -- for winning??

Another headline says  "'Jeopardy!' champion Arthur Chu: Villain or hero?"
stating "Instead of completing categories from top to bottom, Chu jumps around the board to find the Daily Doubles, sometimes bets odd amounts on them, and places final wagers to tie instead of win the game." So what? Since when is it a rule that you have to complete each category before going on to a different one?  And who cares how he does it -- he's the champ, isn't he?

I've seen more outrage about this than I have about the Air Force cheating scandal! Now, those military members are the villains.

The Israeli Difference

Here's a nice headline, which shouldn't come as any surprise: "In Enemy Hands: Israel extends compassion to treat hundreds of wounded Syrians."

Why Work? (Part 500)

The first segment on Greta Van Susteren's show tonight was titled "Why Work?" If Obama has enabled people to willingly stop working to "pursue their dream", then those of us who still choose to work should willingly stop paying taxes to support them!

Bad News is Good News

Read Allahpundit over at Hot Air: "I’m done, guys. If we’ve reached the stage of welfare-state decadence where it’s a selling point for a new entitlement that it discourages able-bodied people from working, there’s no reason to keep going. We’ve lost, decisively."  My sentiments exactly. Isn't it amazing how this administration can somehow put a positive spin on bad or embarrassing news?  How have we gone so far downhill so quickly that not working, and being on the dole, are no longer seen in a negative light?  What happened to the concept of the work ethic?  The Republicans should be stressing the positive and necessary benefits of hard work and a paycheck, something that should not even have to be said in the first place!

An Inspiring Story

Ex-US soldier, 96, reunites prisoners he helped free from Bergen-Belsen.  Read about Lt. Frank Towers.

Boycott the Boycotters!

Let's take the advice of Shoula Romano Horing and boycott Israel's boycotters: "If the hypocritical and bigoted Europeans, Palestinians and other Arabs, as well as their academic and corporate supporters, want to single out the Jewish state, let us take the fight to them and hurt them financially through private lawsuits and legislation. Let Israel finds new economic markets in prosperous Asia where they are appreciated, and quickly leave Europe to sink economically under their own self-righteousness."  It's not only the Europeans and Muslims -- sadly, it's here in our own country, including the American Studies Association, and remarks by our very own Secretary of State.

Barry Rubin

Such sad news, and such a great man! "Barry Rubin, Middle East Scholar, Dies at 64. Lung Cancer Claims Skeptic of Peace Talks."  He spoke for many of us.

Stocks and Bombs

More great news from the Obamaconomy:  "Stocks fell hard on Monday, with the Dow dropping more than 300 points and the Nasdaq off over 2.5 percent, after factory data offered a disappointing take on the economy."  At least they didn't use the word "unexpectedly."

Football Inequality

Congratulations to Russell Wilson and company! 43-8? What a shellacking of the Broncos by the Seahawks! I wonder if Obama thinks that lopsided win wasn't fair?

Massacre

Unfortunately, more people will pay more attention to, and care more about, the irresponsible death-by-heroin of Phillip Seymour Hoffman than they will this slaughter: "Nigeria: 53 murdered as armed Muslims enter church during service, lock doors, slit throats of those trying to escape."

Exhibiting Terror

From the UK Daily Mail: "Haunting exhibits recalling the grief and terror of 9/11 unveiled at new World Trade Center site museum before it opens in May." Good. It should be haunting, and it shouldn't gloss over the impact those traumatic Islamic terror attacks had on our lives.

"I Feel Happy Inside"

Reading these reminiscences of Beatlemania brings back very happy childhood memories for me. I think everyone old enough to remember seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan can identify with these stories. The Beatles were adorable and charming, and their catchy music just made you feel good. It was a wonderful time to be a kid.

Tim Terrific

As seen at Lucianne.com.  I hope this commercial is a great hit and gets him the positive attention he deserves.

Smarten Up, Don't Dumb Down!

Good for her! Michelle Malkin is standing up against wealth-shaming. I have never understood this opposition to success, to working hard, and to earned wealth. Maybe it's pure envy, but whatever it is, these should be things for which everyone should strive. Instead, it seems people want to remain poor, unmotivated, and stupid.

A smaller example of this is news about the cancellation of a program for gifted students because it wasn't "diverse".  Why should the smart kids be punished because of political correctness? Keep the gifted program, reward the kids in it, and let the "diverse" students work hard enough to earn the right to be admitted to it!
