"RFK Jr. has crossed the Rubicon. The war on science and vaccines isn’t looming - it’s here. I had hoped that after the darkest days of the pandemic, we could start rebuilding a stronger, more science-driven public health system. I was wrong. So, starting today, I’m back.
"This isn’t alarmism. This is happening now. We are in the fight of our lives - again. We fought like hell to push back against pandemic denial, anti-vaccine propaganda, and corrupt public health failures before - and we saw that we can win. But this time, the stakes are even higher. I’m not backing down. We’re launching a new campaign, and I’ll need your help. More on that soon.
"As a scientist, I never imagined I would see this. A CDC director fired for defending vaccines. Senior officials walking out in protest. Florida ending vaccine mandates for schoolchildren. And a federal health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has built his career attacking vaccines, now rolling back access to them. This is not a policy disagreement. It is an emergency.
"On September 4, RFK Jr. appeared before Congress and denied that he forced out CDC Director Susan Monarez for refusing to approve unscientific vaccine rollbacks. But Monarez and her attorneys told the truth: she was pushed out for standing up to political pressure, and within hours, four senior CDC officials resigned in protest. Nothing like this has ever happened in the history of the agency.
"And the day before, Florida announced it will eliminate all childhood vaccine mandates. All of them. That means no more requirements for polio shots. No more for measles. No more for whooping cough. Decades of progress erased with one reckless policy. Public health experts warn this will unleash new outbreaks and put millions of children at risk.
"Florida will just be the beginning, because these are not separate crises. RFK Jr. has already restricted COVID vaccine access, even for groups at risk. He has purged scientific advisory panels. He has dismantled federal support for mRNA research. Now he is coming for all the vaccines that protect children, seniors, and vulnerable people.
"It’s becoming crystal clear: RFK Jr. is trying to ban all vaccines. And far too many politicians are falling in line.
"Medical research, from vaccines to cancer, used to be a bipartisan issue. Republican former Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri was known for being a fierce champion of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). But now the new Trump administration has proposed cutting NCI alone by $4 billion, or by 37% next year. And that’s on top of RFK Jr.’s purges of mRNA research that could cure cancers that are death sentences today.
"But I’ve got a message for him: Cancer does not care what political party you support, and eventually it comes for all of us or someone we love.
"Yet departments like Health & Human Services (HHS) have been decimated, with thousands of research scientists and public health specialists gone, and those that remain often unable to do their work. Thousands of NIH research grants around the country are in limbo, their funding illegally frozen or cancelled.
"Let me be clear: this is how epidemics return. This is how preventable deaths become normal again. Vaccines do not care if you are Republican or Democrat. Measles does not care if you are liberal or conservative. Polio does not care if you believe in “freedom.” Disease will find you and your family all the same.
"These MAHA wellness influencers and their misguided crusades - against vaccines, against pasteurization, against science itself - will kill people.
"And the worst part? This was preventable. I’ve been raising the alarm about the anti-science movement for years. I’ve stood with public health experts and pleaded with lawmakers to stop it. Political gamesmanship and ideological extremism won. But surrender is not an option.
"Government scientists and researchers cannot speak out without fear of retribution - but I can. That’s why I’m building one of the largest coalitions of scientists and advocates to fight back.
"Today, my team is launching Vax PAC - a political activism group to protect your right to health and stand up against the torrent of deadly disinformation. Doctors, researchers, and activists will not sit quietly while science is destroyed and lives are endangered. We will hold politicians accountable. We will tell the truth. We will defend public health, medicine, and research against this assault.
