I heard the above expression used on TV earlier to perfectly describe Americans' apathy to the frightening news that North Korea tested its nuclear missiles. Contrast this oblivion to America's reaction to the Cuban missile crisis.
It seems that if it's not reality TV or the lurid messages of ex-Congressman Mark Foley, most Americans are simply not interested in the news.
