Covering Mass Murderers

I agree completely with Mona Charen's assessment of the media as enablers:

"Once again the cable news programs are going wall to wall covering the latest mass shooting. All other programming is on hold. I've said this before. When the news shows do this they are guaranteeing the next atrocity. A twisted desire for fame and attention drives some of this. Recall that when the networks were having a problem with streakers at televised football games, they simply turned their cameras away. The problem evaporated. These mass shootings are a little more complicated, and news organizations cannot completely ignore them. But they don't need to stop everything to cover them. And they certainly should never provide stories about the shooter's problems, failed romances, experience with teasing, or political views."

Stories From The Great Depression

Instapundit linked to this NY Times article about how people survived the Great Depression. I grew up on stories like this, and there is no comparison between then and now. Back then, there was no welfare, WIC, food stamps, and all the other entitlement programs there are today. And back then, all able-bodied people worked, or you had no money and no food. The most amazing book I read about the Depression was "The Worst Hard Time" , and compared to eking out an existence in the Dust Bowl, we all have it easy today.

Another Murder Rampage

Yet another massacre in our country. What a horror for the relatives of the victims, and for the survivors! What got me was this line in the story at 1010 WINS:

``One of the first questions is going to be, what motivated this?'' he said. ``What caused this to happen? What was the kind of person who did it?''

I think it's obvious what kind of person did it; as with all these mass shootings, the killer was a cold-blooded murderer. There are no excuses for this kind of slaughter.

The Difference Between Liberals and Conservatives

I saw the story about the man who robbed a store -- and brought his 9 year old kid along. To me, it was an inexcusable crime; to MSNBC, it was "a father's plight"! Spare me -- and stop excusing crimes like this by blaming it on the economy. Most people don't rob stores -- they would get ANY job to support their family.

I just heard this description of The Messiah on TV, from a UK Telegraph article on "who's hot and who's not" at the G20 meeting:

"Top of the list, of course, is Obama. Yes We Can. And yes, we would. He's so lithe and handsome and funny and smart and he bestrides the free world like a Colossus and will buy us each a puppy. A bit of a no- brainer, really."

Sara Noel writes that common sense is the new frugality. I agree! Unfortunately, common sense seems to be in very short supply these days, along with self-reliance.
