Supreme Decision: Roe vs. Wade Overturned

Today, the Supreme Court officially overturned Roe vs. Wade, ruling that there is no federal constitutional right to an abortion.

Now we have to worry about domestic terrorists venting their outrage on the justices and on the country, and forcing more important issues such as COVID and inflation out of the news.

Ladies, if you prefer not to have a baby, please think instead about using birth control, getting Norplant, or getting sterilized.

Topics We Argue Over

I love this Steve Kelley cartoon. Too bad he didn't also show the back page of the newspaper, with the topics of mask-wearing and vaccinations!

Polio

From the UK Guardian:

"Low polio vaccination coverage among teenagers risks the re-emergence of virulent polio infection in the UK, experts have warned.

Fewer than half of 13 to 14-year-olds received their teenage booster against polio in some parts of England last year, data shows, after public health officials declared a national incident over evidence the virus is spreading in the community.

The form of virus that was detected through routine surveillance of wastewater in north and east London – vaccine-derived poliovirus – poses a low risk to health but there is a concern that a significant drop in vaccination uptake during the pandemic could offer the virus a foothold, allowing it to keep circulating."

How wonderful!  Let's hope there's no re-emergence of polio here in America, or else the anti-vaxxers will make sure that the disease spreads.

People of a certain age can recall family members who had polio as children, and the fear is something that stays with you.

If you want to read a novel about polio's impact on a Jewish neighborhood in the 1940s, read Philip Roth's Nemesis.

"What Are We Waiting For?"

This morning I saw this tweet from the excellent Maria Van Kerkhove. Here's an excerpt:

"We are not yet living with #COVID19 responsibly. Not even close.

Short🧵

↗️People are dying unnecessarily
↗️Millions infected each week
↗️Billions not fully vaccinated
↗️Lives & livelihoods suffering
↘️Dismantling systems needed to end the global emergency & fight the next one."

-- and --

"What keeps me up at night is the complacency, people suffering, death, the dismantling of surveillance, testing, sequencing, workforce…

Pandemic preparedness should be happening now… while we are fighting the current pandemic. Invest now. What are we waiting for?"

The Economy is Good, We Don't Need to Drill, and COVID is Over

The stock market is down over 800 points, and we may be heading for a recession. We can't afford gasoline and food. But Jerome Powell says the economy is very strong.

John Kerry says we absolutely don't have to drill for more oil and gas, but Biden is set to beg Saudi Arabia for more oil.  Also,  "President Biden may resort to using emergency powers if American oil companies don't increase output at their refineries, the president told oil CEOs in a series of letters Wednesday."  Those CEOs aren't falling for the threats.

You rarely if ever hear anything about COVID on the TV news, and the number of new cases is surely an undercount, since not all the states are bothering to report any more. If you see what's really happening, you have to depend on the doctors, scientists, and epidemiologists on Twitter.

It's a good thing we don't automatically believe everything the government is telling us!

As Usual, Just Blame the Jews!

If I were the staffers at these organizations, I'd be very fearful of the intimidation and harrassment that is sure to follow.

"Pro-Palestinian group posts map of Massachusetts naming local ‘Zionist leaders’

Jewish arts group, schools, synagogues among network alleged to be responsible for wide-ranging societal harms by the anonymous page, which also names the organizations’ staffers

JTA — A Jewish arts group. A Jewish high school. A Jewish newspaper. A synagogue network. A major Jewish philanthropy that directs funds to mental health, homelessness prevention and refugee resettlement initiatives.

These are a few of the locations on a dense interactive map of 'Zionist leaders and powerhouse NGOs' in Massachusetts created by an activist group that says it aims to expose 'local institutional support for the colonization of Palestine' and reveal how support for Zionist causes is a nexus point for various 'other harms' in society, ranging from gentrification to the prison-industrial complex to ableism.

The Mapping Project, a Boston-area pro-Palestinian activist collective aligned with the local Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel, is using its map (which includes addresses of the organizations and names of their staffers) to draw literal links between dozens of area Jewish groups, universities, foundations, police departments and other organizations.

The group says its goal is to demonstrate that 'institutional support for the colonization of Palestine is structurally tied to policing and systemic white supremacy here where we live, and to US imperialist projects in other countries.'

Jewish groups in the state say The Mapping Project’s efforts amount to little more than an attempt to catalog and intimidate area Jews."

"Putin's Tax" on Food and Gas

From National Review: "President Biden, seeking to explain Friday’s disastrous inflation report, once again attempted to blame it on Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. 'We’ve never seen anything like Putin’s tax on both food and gas,' he said in remarks at the Port of Los Angeles."

Well, he's right about one thing: we never have seen anything like Putin's tax, because there's no such thing!

But if Putin is smart, he will steal this idea and just blame higher Russian prices on Biden from now on!

A Golf League We Can LIV Without

What an absolute disgrace this is. Here are the suspended players, via Sky Sports:

"Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are among the players suspended from competing on the PGA Tour following their involvement in the controversial Saudi-funded LIV International Golf Series. Graeme McDowell, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Hudson Swafford, Talor Gooch, Branden Grace, Matt Jones, Martin Kaymer, Andy Ogletree, Peter Uihlein and Turk Pettit are the other players no longer eligible to compete in PGA Tour events, including Korn Ferry Tour, Canada Tour and Tour of Champions."

Mickelson looks like he has made the change from Walter White into Heisenberg, but the captions on these photos are much better.

Imagine the damage to reputations had Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus attacked the PGA Tour and then joined the Saudi tour purely for the money. Their reputations would have been destroyed.  Well, that's going to be the outcome for Mickelson, Garcia, Johnson and the others, and it's totally self-inflicted.

Hooray for the PGA!

A Shocking COVID Headline

Thankfully I follow the COVID news, and I don't think COVID is over or is "mild". But even as prepared as I am, I wasn't prepared to see this headline in the UK Guardian. The COVID-deniers will think this is a hoax:

‘We’re playing with fire’: US Covid cases may be 30 times higher than reported

And yet, the CDC's map is still green.
