Victory Gardens

Here's an article about the victory gardens of WW2. But the difference between then and now is that back then, you didn't have welfare or food stamps or 99 weeks of unemployment, so you either did everything you could to help yourself -- or you did without, period. People were self-reliant then, not totally dependent on the government. It's really a shame and an embarrassment to see how unmotivated and lazy people are today. I doubt too many Americans today would want to do the work of planting a Victory garden, just as long as there are others to do the work for them.
