If He Had His Way...
A rare sensible opinion piece from the Asheville Citizen-Times. Read the whole thing. The author, a retired Army officer, talks about how he would fix society's problems if he had his way. Among the ideas he has is this one, which I have always thought should be the case: "And lastly, if I had my way every television channel would be required at least twice daily to show the planes flying into the World Trade Center, as well as destruction at the Pentagon. Play the national anthem in the background. In our instant gratification society, our memories of that terrible day when war reached the shores of the United States are starting to fade. Kennedy also said, 'The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.' Lest we forget, we are at war with fanatics intent on destroying democracy and forcing our submission to their ideals."
