Further Terrorist Attacks Are Imminent

Sky News is reporting that another attack is imminent in England. Do you think this will finally cause our oblivious, apathetic, terrorism-deniers to wake up at long last? Or will they continue to make excuses and assess blame?

A Terrorist "Incident"

They are calling the attack at Glasgow Airport a terrorist 'incident'. Can't anyone use stronger language, or would that be too "judgemental"? According to Wordreference.com, an incident is "a single distinct event; a public disturbance; 'the police investigated an incident at the bus station'." This is not an "incident". It's a terrorist attack. How can we ever fight these jihadist murderers if we're too afraid to call a spade a spade?!

London Terror Plot

I wonder how long the news of these thwarted terror bombings in London will remain in the British consciousness. Will the people show anger and spine, or will this story be downplayed and disappear like the news of our Fort Dix and JFK terror plots were? (I'll never forget that back in 1994, John Kerry claimed that the threat of terrorism has been exaggerated)

It's OUR Country, Stupid

Here is a good article describing the winners and losers in the defeat of the immigration bill. Finally some spine was shown in the Senate, because they heard the outraged voices of their constituents. I agree with this assessment of one of the losers: "THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION – I’ve admired this president for a long time, but I’ve reached a point where I’ve had it up to here (my hand is at my forehead) with this administration’s chronic obtuseness and arrogance. The top priority right now for the administration should be the war. And yet the president spent what little political capital he had trying to shove this atrocious immigration bill down the country’s throat."

Let's celebrate the defeat of the immigration bill with some good reading over at Soccer Dad.

Chew On This

Now that the case of the missing pants has ended, we need another ludicrous lawsuit to entertain us. This one is perfect: "Woman Suing Co. Over Starburst Candy Injury. Plaintiff Says Candy Caused Teeth To Stick Together". Any normal, reasonable person bites into a Starburst or Tootsie Roll or other chewy candy knowing full well that you might lose a tooth or a filling. That's the chance you take. But why be sensible if you can sue instead?

The Last Word on You-Know-Who

This is the best analysis of Paris Hilton. ".. she has excelled at something that has eluded far more accomplished, educated and able people. She not only creates nothing, achieves nothing, contributes nothing - except for disease and driving summonses - she is incapable of doing anything valuable with her days."

A Shortage of Standards

Here's another fine column by Thomas Sowell, about the emphasis on lowlifishness over real news, and the lack of morals and values in our society these days. He writes, "In short, the problem is not that particular people do particular things to get attention. The problem is that the society at large no longer has standards by which to deny or rebuke attention-seekers who have nothing to contribute to society."

Preposterous Poll

Here's a very good article about the amnesty bill from Canada. A Republican poll wants you to believe that 70% of Americans want amnesty for illegal aliens! But this writer seems to understand the situation better than many Americans, including that idiot Trent Lott. Among other things, the writer says: "The American people couldn’t possibly be clearer on the subject. Talk to us about amnesty AFTER you stop the problem by enforcing border security. We don’t care what you have to do to stop continued illegal migration. Forget a fence that will never stop the problem. Stand our military on every mile of the border if need be, but stop the invasion and stop it now."

Fatah 1, Israel 0

Doesn't this sound like a joke? "Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced that Israel would release 250 Fatah prisoners 'without blood on their hands' with a promise that they would not take part in terror activity." Yes, I'm sure they will keep that promise. (Notice that Israel is getting nothing in return.)

Frivolous Lawsuit Time!

It's frivolous lawsuit time again! "A Dutch woman who claimed she suffered emotional damages due to not winning the lottery missed the jackpot in court too. Amsterdam District Court judges Wednesday rejected the claim of Helene de Gier, who said she was traumatized by not winning the country's National Postcode Lottery, which she didn't enter, while her neighbors did." In other frivolous-lawsuit news, that crackpot Judge Pearson, of the infamous "missing pants" lawsuit, thankfully lost his case. "The D.C. Superior Court judge who ruled that an administrative law judge deserved nothing in his $54 million lawsuit against a neighborhood dry cleaner over a pair of lost pants 'chose common sense over irrationality.'" Go to Overlawyered for all the details.

Covering the News

I just love how the media covers the news. This headline is another example: "Infant mortality rising in WNC. More babies are dying in Western North Carolina, and public health experts say they don’t know why." How about "Unfit parents continue to have children they can't take care of"?

It's the Jews' Fault

Read the entire Debbie Schlussel review of "A Mighty Heart", which is ostensibly about Daniel Pearl and his execution by Muslim terrorists, but which turns out to be yet another Muslim-apologist propaganda film. "'A Mighty Heart' is mostly NOT about the Al-Qaeda murder of Daniel Pearl, killed in cold blood specifically because he was a Jew. In fact, the movie minimizes that, instead repeatedly blaming America for its treatment of Guantanamo Bay prisoners... Most shocking, we get an onscreen repeat of the oft-told Muslim myth that 4,000 Jews didn't show up for work at the World Trade Center on 9/11, because the Jews planned the attacks...Any reason, any excuse to grab for Pearl's inexcusable, horrific murder--other than Muslims hate a Jew and barbarically kill him for it--and the movie grabs onto it...Don't judge the people who barbarically killed Pearl because he was a Jew. Don't even think that's why they killed him. Understand the murderers." Now, how come this movie can be shown, yet PBS caused controversy by banning Frank Gaffney's film 'Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center'? Fox News is going to broadcast the companion piece, "Muslims Against Jihad".

A Real Croc

I had to laugh at this story, because I too think both Crocs and flipflops are the ugliest shoe styles ever. (When I was a kid, "flipflops" were made of rubber, worn only at the beach, and called "zories". You never wore them on the street) I believe this author is the same one who criticized VP Cheney for wearing an overcoat on a visit to Auschwitz and didn't like Condi Rice's boots.

Ski Masks in Gaza

Both Smooth Stone and Rubicon3, among others, are spotlighting Thomas L. Friedman's piece "Behind the Masks", in which he asks, "Why were both the Hamas and Fatah fighters wearing ski masks? (And where do you buy a ski mask in Gaza?) These masks are worn by fighters who wish to shield themselves from the gaze of their parents, friends and neighbors, for there was surely an element of shame that Palestinian brothers were killing brothers, throwing each other off rooftops and dragging each other from hospital beds." As Smooth Stone writes, "Only cowards and sociopaths wear masks."

The Attack on Conservative Talk Radio

Neal Boortz reports on the attack on talk radio. That is, conservative talk radio. "So .. .the battle is joined. Liberals feel threatened by talk radio. They tried to succeed with their Air America, and all the George Soros and embezzled funds in the world didn't help them. So, in the liberal world, if at first you can't succeed, use the government to destroy your opponents."

Bribes for Behavior

This is really outrageous: "NYC Poor to Get Cash for Good Behavior (AP) - Poor residents will be rewarded for good behavior - like $300 for doing well on school tests, $150 for holding a job and $200 for visiting the doctor - under an experimental anti-poverty program that city officials detailed Monday." Those of us who grew up being taught good behavior, and being expected to do the right thing simply because it was the right thing, ought to sue for back wages. (e.g..holding a job for 25 years x $150...) NY Post columnis Andrea Peyser has some thoughts on this progam.

If It Walks Like a Terrorist and Talks Like a Terrorist....

This is an excellent column on the outrageous situation in Gaza. I was nauseous when I heard that Bush and Olmert actually called Abbas "a moderate voice and the only true leader of the Palestinian people."

A New Word for the Dictionary

Israpundit has coined a new word: "We have long been seeking a word to describe treacherous Palestinians, vicious militant Islamic terrorists, and the like that carries the necessary indignation and outrage without exposing us to the Left’s usual bleats of racism. We have long underscored the fact that behavioral choices are not a race, but we have nonetheless lacked a single word that carries the necessary condemnation of those choices. We need a word that describes its object as less than human (again, because of subhuman behavioral choices as opposed to DNA), totally untrustworthy and lacking in honor, and unworthy of the respect a lady or gentleman of breeding shows a pet or a domestic animal. We are seeking a word for the kind of individual whom it was once socially (and, in many places, legally) acceptable to strike in the face with a riding whip, for which his only recourse was to demand satisfaction with deadly weapons or crawl into a hole and pull it in after him. It is a general adage that someone who must resort to vulgar name calling lacks the vocabulary necessary to find the correct word. We admit to using such language in the past, only because the English language really lacks a word for individuals–we will not call them people–who stone women to death, kill people for being the wrong religion, shoot pregnant women in their wombs to kill their unborn babies, use pregnant women as suicide bombers, plant bombs on unwitting children or girlfriends, and saw the heads off helpless captives. To date, only more or less vulgar epithets conveyed the necessary outrage and contempt. Now, at long last, the English language has acquired the necessary word: Nifong.....The one useful thing Mike Nifong has probably done with his life is to give the English language a long-needed word for individuals who are (at best) totally without character, ethics, or integrity–the kind who will tell you a blatant lie with a straight face and expect you to believe it. They are not worthy of recognition as human beings, because their behavior resembles nothing a civilized person can even begin to acknowledge as human. Spanish Inquisitors and witch-hunters who enriched themselves by burning and hanging people on phony charges were Nifongs. Al Sharpton is a Nifong. Most Palestinians (noting their advocacy of violence, taqqiya, and suicide bombings) are Nifongs. Yasser Arafat was a Nifong, and so is that little Holocaust denier who runs Iran."

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Mitch Albom wonders why there aren't any good songs that pay tribute to fathers.

We Must be Crazy

Soccer Dad shows us how the US Does Not Fail to Disappoint: "The US may be the only country with a worse lack of judgment than the Israeli government. From The New York Times: Bush administration officials said Thursday that they had been discussing the idea of largely acquiescing in the takeover of Gaza by the militant Islamic group Hamas and trying instead to help the Fatah party of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, retain its stronghold in the West Bank." This is outrageous. We should be helping Israel and not wasting a cent on the terrorists of Fatah!

If He Had His Way...

A rare sensible opinion piece from the Asheville Citizen-Times. Read the whole thing. The author, a retired Army officer, talks about how he would fix society's problems if he had his way. Among the ideas he has is this one, which I have always thought should be the case: "And lastly, if I had my way every television channel would be required at least twice daily to show the planes flying into the World Trade Center, as well as destruction at the Pentagon. Play the national anthem in the background. In our instant gratification society, our memories of that terrible day when war reached the shores of the United States are starting to fade. Kennedy also said, 'The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.' Lest we forget, we are at war with fanatics intent on destroying democracy and forcing our submission to their ideals."

More Reasons You Shouldn't Vote Democratic

Israpundit states, "{Clinton, Obama, and Edwards} have openly endorsed a prominent racist and anti-Semite whose hate speech played at least an indirect role in inciting two violent incidents in which people were killed: the Crown Heights riots and the arson of a Jewish-owned store in Harlem. The source is not some Republican blog, but the racist and anti-Semitic hate organization itself. It is vital that readers circulate this information as widely as possible to underscore Clinton’s and Obama’s close connections to an organization that is every bit as loathsome, and even as violent, as the Ku Klux Klan." That prominent racist and antisemite in question is Al Sharpton, and the organization is his National Action Network.

Media Bias We've All Expected

I knew it! As Atlas Shrugs points out succinctly , "Leftist Mainstream Media Blames the Jooooos" for the intra-Arab violence in Gaza! According to the Opinion Journal's Best of the Web Today from June 14, "The Boston Globe editorial board looks at the Gaza civil war, and finds it's the fault of the Jews....According to the Globe, Israel is to blame both for its 'occupation' and for having ended it--the latter of which 'allowed Hamas to bid for power.' But 'the people of Gaza' are innocent victims. It somehow escapes the Globe's notice that Hamas came to power because Palestinians voted for it. The Globe denies that Palestinians are responsible for their own actions, and thereby dehumanizes them under a pretense of compassion." This is almost laughable.

"Hamastan"

Both Little Green Footballs and The Wall Street Journal via Israpundit are discussing the vile creation of "Hamastan" in Gaza. As usual, political correctness keeps the U.S. government from using harsh language to denounce these acts of violence in no uncertain terms. For an excellent history lesson, Smooth Stone links to this video by the David Horowitz Freedom Center titled 'What Really Happened In The Middle East'.

Miserable Medicine

I was thinking about the contrast between Paris Hilton being treated for her phony "medical condition" in jail, and that poor suffering woman who died, ignored, in a hospital emergency room.

Poetic Justice

Smooth Stone reports on Hamas-Fatah fighting in Gaza (may they kill each other off): "I'm enjoying reading how the Fatah scum are begging for their lives. From 'Don't Shoot, We're Not Jews': The Fatah security services ruled Gaza City for 15 years but are now holed up in fortified bunkers awaiting a fully-fledged assault by Hamas. 'They're firing at us, firing RPGs, firing mortars. We're not Jews,' the brother of Jamal Abu Jediyan, a Fatah commander, pleaded during a live telephone conversation with a Palestinian radio station. Minutes later both men were dragged into the streets and riddled with bullets."

Message For the RNC

Read about this clever message for the RNC regarding the illegal alien amnesty plan.

The Continuing Saga of the $65,000,000 Pants

This ridiculous case of the missing pants gets more surreal by the day. "Before trial began yesterday in the case of the D.C. judge who sued his neighborhood dry cleaners after they lost his pants, the most extraordinary fact was Roy Pearson's demand for $65 million in damages. That was before Pearson, an administrative law judge, broke down while testifying about the emotional pain of having the cleaners give him the wrong pants. It was before an 89-year-old woman in a wheelchair told of being chased out of the cleaners by an angry owner. And it was before she compared the owners of Custom Cleaners in open court to Nazis." This judge is a lunatic. What about the genuine emotional pain of the store owners whose lives he has ruined? Dare we hope the jurors aren't complete morons?

"Schmucks", Indeed!

I normally like Jackie Mason and Raoul Felder, but I think THEY are the schmucks this time. I don't agree with the sentiment in their latest column: "Without immigrants, we would have no atomic age, no computers, no lasers, no microchips (Einstein, Teller, Fermi, etc.). Also, without Dr. Salk, we would now be in the midst of a polio epidemic.Too often the people who want to crack down on immigrants are like members of a country club who, once admitted, don't want to let in anybody else. It should be suggested to them that without immigrants we would not even have an America." The illegal aliens we are trying to keep out are NOT Einstein and Teller; these are criminals and potential terrorists who do not care to become citizens the legal way! To make this comparison is insulting.

I Like This Man

I got a newsletter by e-mail from the Rudy Giuliani campaign via the Jerusalem Post. Here's some of what he has to say regarding Israel and terrorism, "Israel and the United States share common values. We cherish freedom, democracy, and human life. Our shared values have attracted common enemies. The terrorists Israel is fighting are the same terrorists America is fighting, and we must continue to fight them together. Last week Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, announced that the world would soon witness the destruction of Israel. This 2008 presidential campaign will determine how we deal with statements like these and the madmen who make them. I stand by Israel and I'll never embrace a terrorist like Arafat, a tyrant like Ahmadinejad, or a party like Hamas.... A Giuliani administration won't accept business as usual. We will stay strong amidst the threats of tyrants and we will stay on offense against the terrorists." His website has published The Twelve Commitments. They are: . I will keep America on offense in the Terrorists’ War on Us; I will end illegal immigration, secure our borders, and identify every non-citizen in our nation; I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending; I will cut taxes and reform the tax code; I will impose accountability on Washington; I will lead America towards energy independence; I will give Americans more control over, and access to, healthcare with affordable and portable free-market solutions; I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children; I will reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges; I will ensure that every community in America is prepared for terrorist attacks and natural disasters; I will provide access to a quality education to every child in America by giving real school choice to parents; I will expand America’s involvement in the global economy and strengthen our reputation around the world.

Amnesty Obsession

Why is the President continuing his obsession with passing that disgraceful amnesty bill? He said, "We've got to convince the American people that this bill is the best way to enforce our border. I believe without the bill it's going to be harder to enforce the border." The American people are decidedly against this bill, and he knows it, so why is he further alienating his own supporters? Michelle Malkin has more illegal immigration news here.

"It's Time to End the Vilification of Israel"

Amen to that. Smooth Stone links to this most welcome article from the British paper The Independent: " Forty years ago, Israel's victory in the Six Day War was greeted in the West with widespread relief. So how come she's now the most shunned nation in the world - fair game for boycotts and vilification? History has been subtly rewritten, says Howard Jacobson, and it's time to speak out against it."

Carnival-Juggling

Soccer Dad is juggling carnivals once again. I must be the only bookworm who has never been interested in Harry Potter, but this Harry Potter Carnival on the list sure looks like something his fans would love.

The Great Mark Steyn

I almost choked on my lunch when I started reading this Mark Steyn piece at work today: "I forget where I was when I first heard the phrase 'undocumented worker.' Possibly it was after swimming the Rio Grande and emerging dripping on the northern shore to be handed a fake Social Security number and a driver's license."

Bush Baskers

Well, it's nice to see that President Bush is appreciated somewhere. "Albanians hail Bush, 'leader of the free world'. ...his face is on three of the tiny Balkan nation's stamps."

Loco Logo

Debbie Schlussel has an entertaining column about the hideous logo for the London 2012 Olympics and comes up with some alternatives. You can see the original ugly logo at the London 2012 website.

Speling Errers

The Last Time I Wish I Saw Paris

I just came across a conservative website, Jon Swift, and got a kick out of this sarcastic item about (who else?) Paris Hilton. I too cannot understand the sympathy wasted on her (especially by otherwise rational conservatives), nor the incredible amount of media coverage.

A Stunning Video

From Metafilter, this exquisite morph video about the depiction of the face of Jesus in art. The music is gorgeous as well.

Wishful Thinking

Smooth Stone posts a good joke about 3 Democratic candidates.

"An Immoral Boycott"

Read Alan Dershowitz's column on the British National Union of Journalists' boycott of Israel. "While Palestinian terrorist groups murder, kidnap and threaten journalists, the British Union exempts the Palestinian authority, run by the censorious Hamas, from its journalistic sanctions. The reason is obvious. The British Union cares less about journalists or freedom of the press than it does about blindly condemning the Jewish state....Now academics around the world are fighting back against this British bigotry. Led by more than a dozen Nobel Prize winners, thousands of American academics have signed a petition declaring themselves to be honorary Israelis for purposes of any academic boycott. They have pledged to refuse to participate in any events from which Israeli academics are boycotted. Any academic who wishes to join this moral response to an immoral boycott can email ScholarsforPeace@aol.com."

"Proving The 9/11 Conspiracists Wrong"

John Hawkins of Right Wing News has an excellent column called "Proving The 9/11 Conspiracists Wrong". He writes, "But, here's the thing: the conspiracy theorists have it backwards. It's the conspiracy theorists who need to build a case that explains what happened better than the official version, not people who believe the coherent, accepted version of events who need to explain away minutiae that the kooks have come up with." What gets me is that, six years after the fact, we are STILL trying to make clueless people accept what happened that day.

"If...You Must" for June 8

Let's end this work week with another installment of Soccer Dad's series "If...You Must".

Is Everyone Crazy?

Why do our leaders continue to undermine their own countries? Atlas Shrugs is outraged: "The Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, has sent secret messages to Syria offering to discuss handing back the Golan Heights in return for a comprehensive peace agreement, an Israeli newspaper reported yesterday. A peace agreement with assasins? A peace agreement with your mortal enemy? Giving up strategtic high ground to savages? It is not Olmert's to give. IT BELONGS TO ISRAEL."

"Bush Estrangement Syndrome"

Michelle Malkin points out the growing phenomenon of "Bush Estrangement Syndrome", as discussed by Kathryn Jean Lopez. I've been suffering with this disorder myself since the President attacked conservatives for not supporting the illegal alien amnesty plan. (Note: This is not to be confused with the more well-known Bush Derangement Syndrome, as diagnosed by Charles Krauthammer in 2003)

Paris Hilton's "Medical Condition"

Andrew Sullivan perfectly diagnoses Paris Hilton's "medical condition" : "Diagosis: clinically privileged."

The Courageous Walid Shoebat

You have to read what former terrorist Walid Shoebat has to say. There is something very wrong when an ex-Jihadist seems more concerned about global terrorism than Americans do! The Israpundit item reports, "Like many other pundits, he urges American universities to wake up to the dangers of Islamic radicalism on campus. 'We need to find the Oskar Schindlers of the world,' he says…'The Muslim Arabs will never accept Jews ruling over them, which is racism the world is defending.'”

Liberal Freebies!

The ultra-liberal local weekly free paper here has a list of 50 things in town that don't cost you anything. My favorite is #10: dumpster diving! "10: Dumpster dive. For the treasure hunter—and the none-too-queasy—there are illicit outlets of free stuff all over town. It’s called Dumpster diving (not that we condone, or, for that matter, condemn such a thing). Local charity thrift stores regularly toss items that are not suitable for their shelves, and let’s not forget about grocers and restaurants who jettison potentially edible food every day. 'I know a lot of people who do it,' says Mayla, who dives herself, and whose real name is not Mayla. 'Everything they eat is Dumpstered.' Since DD-ers need to protect the juiciest locations, the best sites are often kept within the circle. If you find a choice spot, make sure to keep an eye out—rummaging through Dumpsters runs afoul of some merchants and the long arm of the law." I was surprised that panhandling wasn't on the list, but not surprised that these next two items were: "38: Wrap that rascal! A used condom is a sad, cast-off thing, pale as a ghost and slippery as a banana peel. But fresh from the wrapper, it is wonderful—a tiny life-ring that promises (at least a few minutes of) anxiety-free pleasure. In most cases a condom will prevent pregnancy, and, when properly used, keeps out all but the most cunning STDs. A godsend! A liberating object! A public-health coup! To get some for free, visit these places, but please try to do it tactfully". And "44: Needle yourself. The AIDS activist was out dropping off condoms in barbershops when Xpress first called. But Michael Harney, whose name is synonymous with the Needle Exchange Program of Asheville, also provides free 'injection equipment' in his mission to prevent AIDS and hepatitis. The program mostly serves heroin and cocaine users, he says, but he 'would like to be open eventually to diabetes [patients]' in the elderly, low-income population. For sterile 27- to 30-gauge needles, cookers, cotton swabs, bandages or those life-preserving condoms, call Harney..."

Ah, There's Good Reading Tonight!

As always, there's way too much to read online. For instance, Soccer Dad is juggling carnivals; Smooth Stone invites you to a pro-Israel rally on June 10 (I wonder how much media coverage THAT will get!); and Betsy's Page reports on the best judicial verdict ever, in which the judge refers to Beatles songs!

D-Day, June 6, 1944

This poignant D-Day editorial is from the very liberal and (to me) extremely dislikeable Asheville Citizen-Times, so it was a welcome surprise to see it. It is titled, "We must never lose our awe and gratitude for what D-Day accomplished".

"Two Murderous Covenants"

Smooth Stone has recreated the Two Murderous Covenants that show the similarities between the evil PLO and Nazi covenants. It's from the October 1980 Canadian Jewish Herald. This item should be read, blogged, forwarded, and remembered.

"Mass Holocaust Grave Found at Ukraine"

It never ends. "KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - A mass grave holding the remains of thousands of Jews killed by the Nazis has been found in southern Ukraine near the site of what was once a concentration camp, a Jewish community representative said Tuesday....Efraim Zuroff, director of the Israel office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said the finding was no surprise: 'It underscores the enormous scope of the plans of annihilation of the Nazis and their collaborators in eastern Europe. The scope is enormous, the number of places where murders were carried out is very large and that is why even now at this point, so late after the events, graves are still being discovered,' he added.

More Evidence of the Decline of Our Civilization

We already retched over the story of Amy Fisher reuniting with Joey Buttafuoco for a TV reality show. Today, Fox News reported two stories I thought had to be jokes in very poor taste but then realized that real life has been in poor taste for a long time. Get your Pepto Bismol handy. First, the media is trumpeting the news that Prince Harry may not actually be Prince Charles' son. Isn't there still some sort of decency line the media cannot cross? Evidently not. The second story is that the mother of missing blonde Natalee Holloway is now dating the father of dead blonde Jon Benet Ramsey! If these are hoaxes, they are catering to the sleazy media and public; if these are true, then Larry King and Greta Van Susteren must be salivating. It all makes you want to spray Lysol on yourself.

"Israel Survived"

The great New York Post writer Ralph Peters has this column on the Six Day War: "In the real world, outcomes aren't perfect. There are no wars to end all wars. The proper question is, 'Are you better off than before the shooting started?' Judged by that common-sense standard, Israel is vastly better off than it was on the eve of the Six-Day War. Thanks to the heroes of June 1967, Israel survived. Miracle enough."

More on the Terror Plot at JFK

National Review's editorial says about the terrorist plot at JFK: "The deepest lesson here, though, is that we are at war with an enemy that hates us, that will stop at nothing — even death — to harm us, and that we must understand in order to defeat. That is the first step in the real battle of ideas." It frightens me that this point has to be made over and over, and that people still don't get it -- and maybe only another successful attack will force them to understand it at last.

Face Morphing of Female Portraits

This amazing video was sent to me at work today. It covers 500 years of female portraits in Western art, from DaVinci to Picasso.

"The Quickest War"

David of Soccer Dad passes along this 6-16-67 Time magazine account of the Six Day War. He says, "What I find remarkable is the absence of cynicism that so often marks today's reporting from the Middle East." He's absolutely right. It's also remarkable when you know what Time magazine is like today. (The above Bob Gorrell cartoon sums it up for me.)

British Boycotts of Israel

A great post about McCarthyism in Britain. We could use a Joseph M. Welch here in America, too. Guts and spine and courage seem to have vanished completely from the public discourse.

"A Sobering Reminder of Why We Fight"

From Jews in Green comes this story about the May 6 visit to Dachau by LTG H. Steven Blum, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. "It’s the Chief’s belief that the State Partnership Program can help fulfill 'Never Again' by fostering relationships with foreign nations. At the very least, his stop at Dachau is a sobering reminder of why we fight."

"One of the Most Chilling Plots Imaginable."

Have you heard about the latest terror plot? "Authorities break up alleged plot to attack JFK. Three people were arrested and another was being sought Saturday for allegedly plotting to blow up a fuel line that feeds John F. Kennedy International Airport and runs through residential neighborhoods, authorities said. At a news conference, U.S. Attorney Roslynn R. Mauskopf called it 'one of the most chilling plots imaginable.'" Which probably means that the mainstream media will do everything it can to dumb down and downplay this story, too, the way they did with the Fort Dix plot. They'll make it sound like a hoax, a prank, planned by bungling idiots. Sheeplike Americans will be lulled into further apathy and complacency -- until the next terror plot succeeds. Wait and see.

"Bum's Bill of Rights"

Get a load of this, from Opinion Journal's Best of the Web Today: "A homeless man who was arrested after asking a policeman for a dollar got a judge to throw out the case by arguing that begging is a form of free speech," the Associated Press reports from New Rochelle, N.Y. James Taranto then comments, "But wait. That gives us an idea of how to solve the panhandling problem. Why not make it a misdemeanor to give money to a panhandler? Surely this violates no one's free speech; it merely prevents a commercial transaction that hinders the quality of life. The law would likely spur less defiance than laws against panhandling itself, since citizens who have money tend to respect the law and don't gain anything by giving vagrants money anyway. And who wouldn't be happy to brush aside an aggressive beggar by saying, 'Sorry, it's illegal.'"

Murdered Jews Ignored

Further evidence of media bias against Israel. If Arabs are hurt or killed, that makes headlines. But as Atlas Shrugs points out, the media simply ignores murdered Jews, even murdered disabled children! "Targeting disabled children no less. The world is completely without morality and conscience. Israel must take back her sovereignty and defend her people, her nation. The Palestinian Arab savagery must be destroyed before it all goes nuclear....Thirteen-year-old Chai Shalom suffered from cerebral palsy, and was deaf, mute, and confined in a wheel-chair. He was hospitalized after a rocket landed next to a bus transporting him and three other disabled children....The boy died last week in Soroka Hospital after his condition worsened."

Typhoid Andrew

"Andrew Speaker's apology falls flat". "Good thing quarantined tuberculosis patient Andrew Speaker is a lawyer because if he gets better, he'll be spending the next few years in court defending his recent actions." If Speaker ends up having the gall to sue for being put into quarantine, it will definitely make news at Overlawyered!
