For me too, the biggest story wasn't the arrest of the NBA players and the coach in this major sports betting and cheating scandal regarding poker games; it was the news that the Bonano, Genovese, and Gambino crime families had been involved. These are names I hadn't heard in years, remembering when Rudy Giuliani, before he was Mayor, prosecuted some of the biggest New York mafia members.
I noticed that the officials at the press conference referred to them with an even older name: La Cosa Nostra ("Our Thing").
This gambling scheme was being used to actually fund the Mafia. All I could think of was the movie "Casino" , with the cheating, the Mafia, and "the skim".
Let's hope that from now on, more attention is paid to the actions of the New York crime families.
